Both are jounalling (or is it journaled?) file systems. ext3 is an
extension of the good old ext2, you can switch between journaled and
non-journaled without trouble and you do not need to reformat your
partitions to use it. ReiserFS and a completely new approach, using
different algorithms to store the data (binary trees) and has some more
features (like resizing without reformatting and the capability of plugins
to extend the functionality). I guess as soon as they both are ready for
productive use, it will be yet another religious issue like your favourite
editor or window manager... Let's see how SGI's XFS and IBMs JFS come
along.
