Hi there, on my System (OpenSuSE 10.0) is the Datatrasfer to my usbstick very slow (aoubt 20KB/s). Die device is automatically recognized and mounted. mount returns the following: /dev/sda1 on /media/usbdisk type subfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,sync,fs=floppyfss,procuid,utf8=true) On the usbstick is a fat filesystem. On other Systems it works very well, the same the oher direction (from stick too hd. is ok.) Does anybody know what could be the reason of this slow datatrasfer? thanx a lot. Hi, I used Konqueror, Firefox and Opera to see the Gallery of new files, and all have the same problem no iconified preview of images that end with png. After click on link there was the image, so I'm wondering is the problem here or on the server side. -- Regards, Rajko.

I don't know what's going on behind the scenes, but where is the marketing side and the Novell/SuSE knowledge involved? OpenSuSE has important goals and at the moment the frontpage it THE portal to openSuSE. Current subject acknowledges there is demand to improve the frontpage (or even the site) to better match the goals. Since Novell supports the project and it is in both OpenSuSE and Novells interest to make the project succesfull by using all resources provided. So far I have only read vague plans to start the lift-up / redesign and mainly targeted to hope to get some ideas/help from the starting community. This sounds nice if the project was started by the community from ground up, but this is OpenSuSE. We already have a large user/knowledge base from the corporate years besides the fresh open community. The SuSE website was very good for years, build to attract. Novell/SuSE adapted the concepts and there it is still strong. Novell and SuSE have done a good job so far to make (open)SuSE attractive by use of their very well designed websites and their marketing knowlegde. It is not hard to imagine why there is demand for a lift-up/redesign with this in mind with the current wiki look-and-feel and where to get some solid startup help for this? Maybe this sounds not-done from community perspective to make it really a community project, but OpenSuSE needs a good and solid start with help from both sides. Greg Mancusi-Ungaro should be available for the marketing perspective for the lift-up and there must be some talented Novell/SuSE design staff. Hello :-) The translation guide (I beg, not verified) say that the names of the pages should be translated. This is nearly impossible if we need a consistent localized wikis. This is a proposal to cope with this. * the need of translating the name localized wikis are done mostly for people not able, not willing or not wishing to read the english one. Such people will probably be upset to see english title bars. Don't forget that the page name is also the main title of the page (and displayed so). So we need to translate the name. * the need to keep the english name It"s mostly for easy the interwiki links process. If any name is translated, interwiki links become a one by one control process. If ever an, said, spanish page is done from the english one _after_ I already translate the french one, I will never know and so fail to link it. However the solution is pretty simple: It's to keep the english name for a page only containing a redirect. There are two ways of doing so. first create the english name page, then move (rename) it, the redirect is done automatically. or second if the localized page is already there, create the english name page and fill it with #REDIRECT [[localized page]] Then in all pages, translated or not :-), add [[en:englishname]] [[sp:english name]] [[de:... [[fr:... (all the localized wikis) so as soon as the link will be created it will be activated in the sidebar. Hello! I intended to create just a page for the categories of articles available in German, yet ended up with something like a start-page. It uses the arrangement of the German wikipedia frontpage. Since wikipedia has been around for some time, people are used to it and I thought there was no need to re-invent the wheel. I know there are some french language people here, so forgive me if I make this call for a one time help. Probably the problem is the same for the others new wikis :-) even if the wikis will someday live by themselves, for them to start we need a number of page right now. There are probably 40-50 pages that needs badly to be translated from the english wiki to the other langages ones. after that, we can hope than new local readers/writers will come. if any of yours could help translating 2-3 pages each, this would be very appreciated. After that you could turn back to your usual work. Handling of meetings in the wiki

Hello, I'd like to suggest some improvements in the handling of meetings in the wiki. The current way has 3 pages: - $date-status-meeting - $date-status-meeting-minutes - $date-status-meeting-transcript I'd like to see only 2 pages: - $date-status-meeting - $date-status-meeting-transcript and have the minutes on the $date-status-meeting page. Currently, the $date-status-meeting page starts with "This meeting [...] will be held at $date_in_the_past" (which looks outdated, BTW - change it to "... was hold at ..."). The page content mostly consists of the Agenda, which is repeated in the minutes in any case (or even could be removed because the "Contents" box contains it ;-) Having the minutes on the $date-status-meeting page would be a more obvious way. If I open the $date_in_the_past-status-meeting page, I expect to see a summary of the meeting. Currently, there's just a small link to the minutes that could be overlooked. Also, it would save a click ;-) Another question is if there should be a common namespace for the meetings like Meetings:status:$date - but that's just a s/$date-status-meeting/Meetings:status:$date/ and therefore can be discussed independent of the 3 vs. 2 page question above. What do you think about my suggestion? I notice than the link "recent change" desapeared from the wiki menu. It's the one I use most, so is there a good reason to have done that? RSS news feed - a technical investigation

This thread is about the technical solutions of creating an RSS feed of openSUSE news. Nothing else, please don't hijack this thread, if you want to discuss whether we should have an RSS feed, please start a new thread. Some observations, and possible avenues. 1. The recent changes page and newpages on the wiki already has RSS. http://en.opensuse.org/index.php?title=Special:Recentchanges&feed=rss http://en.opensuse.org/index.php?title=Special:Newpages&feed=rss We could have a News: namespace and the Recentchanges page allows filtering on Namespace so for example http://en.opensuse.org/index.php?title=Special%3ARecentchanges&namespace=100 is all recent changes in our current SDB: namespace. It would have been nicer to use the Newpages page, but this doesn't allow filtering by namespace. http://en.opensuse.org/Special:Newpages&feed=rss 2. There are things called wiki bots, scripts which automatically contribute and edit wikis. a.) Is there an existing RSS bot that reads wiki pages and creates an RSS feed? Or b) alternatively puts an RSS feed into a wiki page. This last option would still require us to have our news hosted somewhere that creates an RSS feed. Well, it seems I'm the only one interested in translating opensuse.org into Polish so far... :) There's however one person, who's helping me with that by reading already translated documents and reporting his opinions. What kind of login?

Looking on openSUSE wiki, and Wikipedia. One with login, the other without. They had login too and the site was small. Then they removed login, and site started growing to its present size. How many people will go trough registration process, just to make minor edit? I think just a few. I edited Wikipedia few times, with login requirement it would be no edit at all. So, what is what we want? Protected site or active one? Fear from vandals? Wikipedia has same problems, and obviously some solutions. We can have some pages protected, some accessible with login and the rest free. -- Regards, Rajko M.

Translating the present pages, I noted some remarks. Please, see this only as discussion notes. If you agree with them (after editing them as much as you want) it could be a good idea to make a wiki page. I don't really know of the english/us habits, but I was for a long time a french author and editor (books, may be the olders of you remember the HP-41 days - I had books translateds in english and edited in USA, also in Netherland) and periodics. Of course there are many times where rules must _not_ be followed, but to do this, we needs rules :-))) jdd small remarks on the subject of article writing and section handling. It's a good practice (anywhere, not only in the wiki) * to don't make unnecessary cascading subsections. just an example, the toc here http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Howto has a "2 Procedures" section with 3 more levels sub-sections and many of them before reaching the "3 Links". It should probably be better to move up one level the 2.4 SDB tags. it's not always easy to do, however :-), but usually we should use only "==" and "===" * when sub-sections are used, one sub-section title must follow immediately the section title, with almost no text between them. again only as an example: http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Howto#Syntax There should be a sub-section after Syntax, for example "==== Basics ====" this is specially important with the way mediawiki opens the editor window, to have just openned the relevant part. spell checking

Purpose of our Wiki and copying of Wikipedia.

I would like to discuss the copying of Wikipedia articles and the larger purpose of our wiki. First I don't see any point in copying articles from Wikipedia: 1. I believe it is a breach of the GFDL as the current openSUSE site terms are not currently GFDL compatible. 2. Any article copied is doomed to become out of date, with any update of wikipedia. 3. It is easy to directly link to Wikipedia with an interwiki link eg [[Wikipedia:Interwiki_link]] will link to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interwiki_link I think our Wiki "mission statement" should be that our wiki should only contain information in relation to SUSE Linux or openSUSE project. If we have a page on KDE it should be a brief description and about KDE on SUSE not a history or great detail of KDE, as this is unmaintainable in the longterm, but it should link to the KDE project homepage and the Wikipedia page for KDE, for the indepth detail, that is not relevant to SUSE. This of course, does not only apply to material sourced from Wikipedia. External image embedding is now turned off.

Since the upgrade external image embedding is turned off on the wiki. Unless this was deliberate, could we turn this back on. Releases Table

I'm working on a french version of the Releases table. Hi, I added the Portuguese translation to all those main sites (the ones listed on the Translation Page) and some more, so I think that it is a good start. I wonder however if ithere is any one out there that would also be interested in helping with the Portuguese translation? Alguém por aí que queira ajudar? The Portuguese language is one of the top most native languages spoken in the world (ranked 5-7), so I think it is good to have it supported. I kind of new with these translation in the wikipedia. In order to maintain pages I already translated, how can I know that the original (english) pages were changed? I set the pages to "watched" so am I going to be notified of the changes? Hello! I would like to add an article about updating KDE via Yast. I think that for this kind of article but also for things like "Updating from SuSE x to SuSE y" it does not make sense to create an new category update, yet installation is not perfect either. So what about putting those two topics together and renaming the Installation-category to Installation/Update? Sven

When I go to http://en.opensuse.org/Category:Howto or any other of the categories I get: Category:Howto From openSUSE Howto Documents The "Howto" document is well known within the Linux community, and is a detailed "How to" document covering a specific topic. <a huge vertical space> Articles in category "Howto" There are 55 articles in this category. What is that space for and if it has no use, how can one get rid of it? Sven

Japanese Pages are ill-coded

Hello, Today I went to opensuse-wiki pages and found all Japanese Translated pages are ill coded. Many characters are turned into a black circle with white question mark. What do you think happend? Could I correct them in some ways? noniko noniko(a)netbeans.jp

Site terms are still not GFDL compatible.

The Wiki update is a big improvement, however there is still the bit in the Terms of Site (http://en.opensuse.org/Terms_of_Site), that would be good to remove as it prevents posting material that is under various free licenses, as Novell makes the following claim for User Submissions: "Novell and its designees will be free to copy, disclose, distribute, incorporate and otherwise use the communications and all data, images, sounds, text and other things embodied therein for any and all commercial or non-commercial purposes." In other words anything you post will be licensed under GFDL, to everybody except Novell who can use the material as they wish (ie you can't post images, text from GFDL licensed sources, unless you also own copyright) Peter 'Pflodo' Flodin
