There are a few distros available that are designed to be installed on pen drives etc. Also, the computer must support booting from those drive.
My BIOS supports it, but this is not a pen drive, this is a full hard drive in an enclosure. Where could I find such a distro? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

Google on "linux distro usb" to find several.

Those are just live distros, I'm talking about a full version of SuSE linux INSTALLED on a usb connected hard drive. my hard drive is a 250GB internal hard drive that I have put in a usb enclosure and I want to install SuSE 10.0 to it. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Perhaps those links will provide you with sufficient info. What happens if you try to install to that drive?

The install disc recognizes that a usb hard drive is there, but doesn't want to do anything with it (i used the grep command to find that out, someone on the chats helped me with that) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I guess "recognizes that a usb hard drive is there" means the drive shows as e.g. /dev/sda? What do you mean when you say "doesn't want to do anything with it" ? Is it not available in the partitioner? /Per Jessen, Zürich

Ok, this is exactly what happens when i try to install. I go through to just after it does the system check then I hit ctrl+alt+f5 which brings me to a command prompt, i type lsmod | grep usb_storage which gives this reply: usb_storage 72512 0 usbhid 43616 0 usbcore 112640 5 usb_storage, uhci_hcd, usbhid, ehci_hcd ide_core 122380 4 piix, usb_storage, ide_disk, ide_cd scsi_mod 131304 6 st, sbp2, usb_storage, sg, sr_mod, sd_mod i then hit ctrl+alt+f7 to return to the installation screen, go to the partitioning, go to custom partitioning, but my usb device is not there as an option. Do i need a special driver or something? Ben __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

That is odd - I think you should open a bugreport. I have done a lot of installs off a USB-stick, and the USB device is always listed as /dev/sda in the partitioner. What does "cat /proc/scsi/scsi" say? when you swap to a shell, can you do "fdisk /dev/sda" ? /Per Jessen, Zürich

If your disk is an ide hard drive that becomes a usb in the enclosure, I've had success by installing suse as hdb. Simply then remove the hard drive and put it in your usb enclosure. With grub, it becomes hd1, ( assuming hd0 alredy exists) --gary

I think you can do it if you define a /boot partition in an internal HD, and the rest in the usb drive. Don't know how or the details, though, just an educated guess. - -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.0 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Made with pgp4pine 1.76 iD8DBQFEYTlEtTMYHG2NR9URAgWMAJ983ASapoq9Yjf2l++tOU2BC5HDHQCeM9ak Uz5IRpZUHVxTZcEUqV4fgAI= =Kcst -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Why not just try it? If your USB connected harddrive is bootable, I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to install SUSE on it and boot from it. Does your USB harddrive "manifest" itself as a SCSI-drive when in Linux? I've more or less switched to booting from a USB stick when I'm installing or using the rescue system - the stick typically becomes /dev/sda, and is listed as an installation option. Here's what I would do - boot from SUSE CD1 (or USB stick), go through the motions up till you get to chose what software you want, keyboard layout etc. At this point, the partitioner will show whether you can pick your USB harddrive to install on. /Per Jessen, Zürich

If you are using SUSE then you already have one. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998

Thanks for the help, but one, the HP tool would reformat my whole drive, not just a partition. Two, I am trying to use the full SuSE linux, not a live distro, cuz those are VERY limited in funcionality. And three, no I didn't find my enclosure on the website. If anyone knows where I can get the driver, my enclosure is made by CP Technologies model CP-U2H-3H. Thanks again for helping point the way a bit. To all who helped me, thank you. I got it working with 10.1 final version, it detected my hard drive. Thank you all again. Ben __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com
