Hi All, I have 7.3 Prof on my machine with MS 98 on a single shared hard disk (dual boot). Are MS utilities (disk re-fragmneter , virus checker etc ) likley to foul up the SuSE partition/data? Many thanks. James --------------------------------- With Yahoo! Mail you can get a bigger mailbox -- choose a size that fits your needs

No. I've been dual booting for about 3 years now, and though it's extrtemely rare that I ever go into my M$ partition, when I do, I run scandisk and AV often, and it's never messed up my dual boot setup. YMMV of course, but I really don't think you have anything to worry about. John

Be careful with some Windows anti-virus utilities, they think that the boot code for LILO or GRUB is a virus. I have seen this occur with a freinds box. If it detects a virus on the MBR, tell it not to repair. If you tell it to repair, then you will loose the ability to boot into linux. Just an observation. -- Marshall "Nothing is impossible, We just do not have all the anwsers to make the impossible, possible."

I don't think he's talking about using the M$ utilities on his linux partition. I believe he just wanted to know if using them in his M$ partition would 'leak' over to his linux partition and do any damage. Besides...M$ sees nothing but itself/other M$ OS's, and has no clue about a linux partition on the same hdd. John

I have read an article about certain MS upgrades that would not work if it saw a Linux partition. Mainly 98SE i think? I never had any issues but this individual did. As far as the utilities writing to the linux partitions, you are right. But he may want to be careful about the antivirus thing though. You can set them up to just scan and repair automatically. If it overwrites the boot sector because the program thinks that it is a virus, then he may not be able to boot back into linux :( -- Marshall "Nothing is impossible, We just do not have all the anwsers to make the impossible, possible."

Heh, one of the best reasons to have a Linux boot disk made during install, or be real careful with CD1 of the SuSE set and don't scratch it up or lose it. <G> John
