If I was realistic I would use a Dell Inspiron 9100.. I have always bought dell laptops and never had any problems with running *nix on them. If I was dreaming then http://www.go-l.com/laptops/hollywood_gold/features/index.htm Would win hands down ;-) Regards Mark

These websites should give you a better approach: http://www.tuxmobil.org http://www.linux-laptop.net/ HTH, Martin
I would also go for the Dell option. VERY linux friendly. for a review of all dell laptops and how they behave, there is a yahoo group, linux-on-dell-laptops and perodically there are long threads about it. If linux is the only OS you're gonna be having, you might also even give it a try and ask it without windows (you might save some hundred bucks). People have succeeded in doing this. I got my laptop from http://www.powernotebooks.com/ and have been pleased with it. I'm running SuSE 9.0 Professional. -- Hugh mailto: hrtlist@cpia.jhu.edu

I love my IBM Thinkpad X31. It does very well with SuSE 9.1 on it. The only thing I haven't tried is the modem because I don't need it. I also haven't messed around playing dvd's on the system. Otherwise, even the built-in IBM 802.11/a/b/g wireless Just Worked. We're also thinking about getting some Compaq 1000's (something like that) for a laptop program at my kid's school and we're going to try SuSE 9.1 on them, too. Can't give you first-hand info on those yet. I love my Thinkpad. Malke -- "And that's how we learned our lesson!" - Bender

This is the most beautiful laptop I've ever seen. Do you know for a fact that it will work with linux? Thanks, Jerome

IBMs are good with Linux. I have a ThinkPad R31, which works well with Suse 9.0 and previously with Red Hat 7.3. IBM even has a list of Linux certified systems.

Malke -- I had a Compaq desktop machine at work. (I've been retired for the last year.) What a junker! Not enough slots, and it would not let me have 2 hard drives and a CD, no matter how I tried. (I wanted to put Linux on the second hd.) They could almost not give me one.

Here's a company that does. They will sell a computer with Linux or without any OS and reduce the price.

Before you go buying any laptop, google on complaints <company> You will be surprised what you see on some of the major sellers/manufacturers. Service seems to either be great or frighteningly dismal. Be especially wary of their Customer Satisfaction warranties. They can be very limited in scope and time. I recently bought a low end model from one of the leaders and although it ran SuSE9.1 better than xp, I had a helluva time with tech support and customer service trying to resolve a dead unit 3 weeks after I received it. If they follow through and actually send me another new unit, I may have nice things to say about them, but talking to 9 or 10 people around the world in almost 3 hours on the phone is a bit trying. Outsourcing Tech/Customer Support really sucks big time. Caveat Emptor ra

Another company that sells Linux installed computers is Los Alamos Computers. I've bought from them and they're very good to do business with.
