I'm getting the following error on my SUSE 9.1 box with kernel 2.6.5-17.14 installed when running vmware-config.pl:
Building the vmmon module.

Configuring VMware requires that the kernel sources be installed also. After installing the kernel sources cd /usr/src/linux and make cloneconfig then re-run vmware-config.pl. It should now work. I just went through the same thing. Ken

Has anyone successfully installed this that could give a hint as to what development packages are required for the VMWare install?

Same situation here. vmware 4..1 build-7568 runs fine on my stock SuSE 9.1 kernel, after YOU upgrade, 2.6.4-54.5-smp. After upgrading from 8.2 to 9.1 on this machine all I had to do is run vmware-config.pl and get the relevant vmxxx modules compiled and loaded. Now, I haven't really played with it much, so there may wtill be some hidden surprises, but so far so good. Alex.

There's the problem. You're changing the directory that *should* be coming up by default. This is the directory of the *"running"* kernel, not the sources, and it's /lib/modules/2.6.4-54.5-smp/build/include on my machine (SuSE 9.1 with the latest YOU kernel). Whatever you've done in the interim may change that. Look for what it should be exactly, but it will be whatever is in /lib/modules/<version>/build/include. Regards, dk

Well gee whiz.... on my system (which has a vanilla 2.6.6 kernel and is running VMWare 4.5.1 just fine) if you look in /lib/modules/2.6.6/: you will find: /lib/modules/2.6.6/build ---> /usr/src/linux-2.6.6/ which is *exactly* the same thing as what is coming up from vmware-config.pl (and it's always been that way) -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ + Bruce S. Bruce- As I haven't done this in quite some time, would you be so kind as to walk me through the steps of installing a 2.6.6 vanilla kernel form kernel.org (including kernel-source I assume)? The last kernel I actually did install myself was about 18 months ago and it was a 2.4.x kernel. I know some things have changed. But if you would be kind enough to outline the steps for getting it installed and running on my 9.1 machine, I'd be grateful. Thanks a lot!

Running 9.1 Pro, kernel 2.6.4-54.5-default, plus all YOU updates and nothing updated via apt that I know of that would influence VMware 4.5.1. Ran vmware-config.pl and it compiled and configured just fine. I've run all of my YOU updates, and haven't seen a kernel update - sitting at 2.6.4-52... Still can't run vmware.
Installed on three machines and working fine. If you have upgraded the kernel via YOU, first update would have installed newer kernel, make sure you reboot with the new kernel. You also need to make sure that you have the kernel sources (NOT src) installed. Run vmware-config.pl and you should be good to go. Of course you also need a valid license, temp or permanent. If you still have problems try re-installing vmware. -- Ken Schneider unix user since 1989 linux user since 1994 SuSE user since 1998 (5.2)

Do a google for 'vmware patch 2.6' and you'll get a link to the patch, that's needed.

The vmware knowledgebase says that 2.6 kernels are not supported because no Major distribution is out with it. Ha!
Maybe you should write them an email and make your point. :-) Janus -- Roskilde University, Denmark. Department of Technology and Social Science. International Development Studies. ESST - Society, Science and Technology in Europe.

I'm getting the following error on my SUSE 9.1 box with kernel 2.6.5-17.14 installed when running vmware-config.pl:
I have the same kernel from YOU and was getting the same error. The key is missing Modules.symvers file in source tree. It is built when you go to /usr/src/linux and do: make cloneconfig make modules (no need to do make modules_install--they are already there). Then vmware-config.pl finishes properly. Thanks, that did the trick. One last question. What do I use for the path to the CD-ROM device when setting up VMWare? For example, it defaults to /dev/cd0 but SUSE appears to use another convention. I tried /media/dvd but I got an error message saying that this did not appear to be a CD device. I suppose it's looking for an entry in /dev but can't seem to find it in SUSE. Thanks. -- Cheers, Trey --- No lake so still but that it has its wave; No circle so perfect but that it has a blur. Figured out it was probably /dev/dev (how it appears in fstab), yet with my Win200 disk in the laptop drive, VMWare says that there is not a bootable disk there.
