Hi, people. I cannot read the CD-ROM which comes with the Unicode 3.0 book. Some tells me it uses a Jolliet (spelling?) file system. What is this? Is there any hope to read that disc here? P.S. - By the way, do we write disk or disc? The spell checker accepts both. -- François Pinard http://www.iro.umontreal.ca/~pinard -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

Joliet is the Microsoft extension to ISO 9660 filesystem. You can find everything you need on the subject at this URL: http://www-plateau.cs.berkeley.edu/people/chaffee/joliet.html Disk is used. I'm not sure about all the other "yanks," <g> but this one uses disc when referring to CD's and disk when referring to diskettes (as I mentioned in my previous post, that's what it says on the Jewel cases and the CD-ROM drive). Calling all the other Americans around here, what do you think? Gotta hear from more than just the Brittons on this issue. ;-) -Tim ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. Butler Universal Networks Information Tech. I think I like the Aussie version the best. We Yanks have another catchy one though, when the words "AOL" are applied to the front, they are known as coasters. <g> -Tim ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. Joliet is normally compiled into the kernel. It is an extension to the ISO9660 filesystem and gives support for long filenames on CDs so while not completely essential it is very desireable. On 4 Jul 2000, [ISO-8859-1] François Pinard wrote:

To comment on what I believe was François' question, I've always used the following rule of thumb: If the media is optical in nature (CD-ROM, DVD, MiniDisc, SparQ, etc.), I use disc. If the media is magnetic (floppy, fixed, Zip, etc.), I use disk. Nobody told me that this was right or wrong, but this seems to be the convention that reputable media producers (Imation, Sony, Fuji) use for their product nomenclature. -- -=|JP|=- "Why, oh, why didn't I take the blue pill?" François,

The official spelling for the CD-ROM type of media would be disc (at least going by the little "Compact Disc" logo on pretty much ever CD Jewel Case out there). Hope this helps... -Tim ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. Butler Universal Networks Information Tech.
