[opensuse] NFS server sometimes fails to start at boot
Hello list, I migrated my home server to a new box (Dell PE2650) a couple of weeks ago. Installed with OS 11.2, 32bit, fully patched. Problem: from time to time, the NFS server fails to fully start at boot. The "modprobe nfsd" has clearly happened, but the nfsd kernel threads are not present. Mount requests from clients are rejected with "RPC program not registered". If I then "rcnfssserver start" by hand, everything is started properly. I've looked at the logs, but there's no error message. The usual NFS startup entries are just not there. Quick Google search hasn't turned anything up. Has anyone else seen this ? TIA Cheers. Bye. I got something similar, not yet found what happens.
I'll try to find the cause today...
Thanks.

Probably i am wrong but I solved similar problem 2 or 3 years ago. Is there any new service installed ? If your answer is yes, you've alter the sequence your daemons start on. My server on rc3 indicates S05nfs. try to change to S06 or 7 but never before network (Is your IP established when nfs try to start?) o after any other service where remote filesystems were needed. In this way your nfs server will start in a diferent context where interference has missed. Hope this help you. Alfredo J. V. P.

Hello Alfredo, Alfredo J. V. P. wrote: properly, the next it doesn't.
If your answer is yes, you've alter the sequence your daemons start on. My server on rc3 indicates S05nfs. try to change to S06 or 7 but never before network On OS 11.1, it seems the link is called rc5.d/S09nfsserver (checking on a comparable server on the corporate network here). I can check at home if the name is the same. But as far as I know, the OpenSuSE init scripts have their own way of handling the dependencies between themselves.
(Is your IP established when nfs try to start?) Looking at the sequence of events, yes. There may be delays between the card being configured and it being actually available, due to some negotiation with the switch, but since I use a non-manageable dumb switch, this shouldn't take very long.

Indeed. Do not attempt to change the ordering manually, it will not (by default) work. It is documented.

You have to use the traditional network setup method for the nfsserver script to work properly, ie, to ensure that the network is up before nfsserver runs. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Perhaps... Yes, sometimes I can't connect from the client; I try restarting both server and client, and finally it works. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. I sometimes also experience the same problem in 11.1. Using traditional network method; in my case, I remove the nfs init script from the run level at boot time, and call it from /etc/init.d/after.local in client. No need to modify nfsserver configuration in the nfs server. After that the client can access to the nfsserver. regards, -- medwinz ======================= http://medwinz.blogsome.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I added a "sleep 5" instruction in /etc/init.d/nfsserver, at the very beginning of the "start" section. Since then, I've not had the problem any more.
Hope this can help someone else. Ph. A. -- *Philippe Andersson* Unix System Administrator IBA Particle Therapy | Tel: +32-10-475.983 Fax: +32-10-487.707 eMail: pan@iba-group.com http://www.iba-worldwide.com
