most probably needs codecs. in this case, wouldn't be easier for you to download mplayer rpms from packman witheverything you might need compiled? Josephine

I've found the packman site more reliable for xine, and there is never a need to force. Once you do force, all bets are off. Use setup, and play around with the video drivers till you find one that works. I use SDL an xv but your vid cards might work better with others. Your best bet is uninstall, to go to packman http://packman.links2linux.org/ and get a complete kit from a known good source and re-install. But look, its hardly fair to come looking for help when you install with --force. You're saying, in effect, "I haven't got time to follow procedures so some body else come and do my homework for me". -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

Having both is fine, as long as each of them works. It's just that Kaffeine (to me) seems to be a nicer front-end, compared to the Xine-ui front-end, but I still have both anyway, because I think that the xine build requires it no matter what. John B

Kaffeine requires xine. kaffeine is just a user interface for xine. Xine is a command line utility that usually requires a UI of some sort (such as xine-ui). Having both is not unusual - comes that way on SuSE 9.1, but SuSE installs a crippled xine. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

How so? I'd like to know to see if it's worth replacing.
Legal reasons.
e.g. DVD playback requires the DeCCS stuff, which is illegal under the DMCA
in the US. (IIRC)

Ahem... I'd like you guys to continue this thread without my name in the subject. You have no idea how many filter rules you are tripping in my machine. ;-) But since the US case was based on a Norway case (i think) It may be legal now in the US since the Norway case was dismissed. It hasn't been back to court since the dismissal, and the motion picture industry has started to realize its a fools errand to pursue this just because its Linux and not Windows. They risk getting tossed out of court and losing more than its worth if they get in front of a somewhat smarter judge who decides that if you can play it on one computer you should be able to play it on ANY computer. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

Ok, where is a good place to pull the "good" xine RPMs from? I finally started converting my home system to SuSE 9.1 last night, and want to get full multimedia support going. I noticed on Packman's site there's like 50 xine options... Also, I've noticed a fair number of sites that mention the DeCSS software don't have it available for download. (I do have apt installed -- does apt install xinelibs get the right one?)

Those are the things Xine will need to run well, but believe me, they're good for many other things too once you learn how to use them. It's a bear to download them all with just dialup, but if I can do it, anyone can, heh. Just make sure you download the necessary things *for your version number* (I always get the src.rpm's of everything and rebuild, so I know it's made for anything weird I may have done on my system). Many of those 50 things are just skins. A similar error is described for the ogle DVD player. From the faq (http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/groups/dvd/faq.shtml): 20. I only get a blue window, can't see any video but I do hear the sound. Or I have a fast computer but it very slow, the title doesn't contain "Xv". Your Xvideo (Xv) driver is not working correctly. Upgrade to the latest version and try again. Drivers for Matrox G200/400, 3dfx and i810/i815 are included in XFree86. If you have a nVidia card get the drivers from them. Most ATI cards are supported by the drivers from the GATOS project. For S3 cards Tim Roberts S3 Savage page or perhaps from S3 Graphics. Newer SiS drivers, along with much information, can be found at SiS VGA chipsets. There are also binary drivers for Matrox cards. The things to test when there are display problems/artifacts is to try different display resolutions and/or colour depth 16/24/32bpp. Lowering the display refresh rate is also something that will free up bandwith on the card an might allow the video overlay to work (better). Yes, this is my problem. Thank you. I'm using intel 845G chipset, and to fix it, I must download plenty rpm, that I'm afraid I can break other things. I've seen this same blue screen in Xine on some machines and not on others. Interestingly enough, it is only a display problem, because if you take a snapshot while the movie is running you will get a good image. kaffeine is a different front end for xine, and it ALWAYS works, even thought it is running the same xine code, on the same chipset. The machines that fail for me with xine (but work with kaffeine) are intel 815 machines. I've had xine running on this machine prior. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

thanks for the info. mine also working when I'm using SuSE 8.2. ;)) my kafein is broken due to forcing xine install. when I got the 'blue screen' I thought something wrong with the xine, and I force install. (rpm --install --force). With your information, I will try to uninstall all the xine/kafein things first, then re-install the original xine/kafein, then do the rpm -Uhv things. Thanks again for the help. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail is new and improved - Check it out! http://promotions.yahoo.com/new_mail
