Sorry to ask this I will probably get flamed for it. but. I have used KDE for a long time. I rarely use Gnome, mainly because I don't know how, but I was wondering what you would advise me to use. I like KDE, but I am getting into .NET development and from what I understand the GTK# library is much much further along than the QT# library. And just for general use what would you suggest?

Please don't ask religious questions like this. The only sort of answer you're likely to get is "use $DESKTOP because I say it's best" I use KDE because I firmly believe the gnome developers have gone clinically insane, but that's just me. Try both and use what you like best. Both are supported

LoL, I forgot about that aspect of the question. I have used gnome and frankly don't like it, but from what I understand it is easier to develop for useing Mono than KDE. That is why I asked. I guess a good qeustion to ask is Why do you prefer 1 over the other? I don't know more than likely I will continue to use KDE. I just wanted some opinions other than my own narrowed one.

I use KDE today because at one point, the gnome developers started doing something they persisted in calling 'usability'. Listening to them speak was a little like reading Sigmind Freud's directives to the prospective psychoanalyst: Make up your mind about the ailment, and don't let the patient's words sway you. They knew best, and people who disagreed where just stupid or ignorant. At one point after gnome2 came out I actually liked it.Then they started ripping out features, more and more for each version, in the name of 'usability', to the point where for me today it's practically useless. All the while KDE kept adding functionality and features and making it cooler and cooler. Today KDE is so feature rich I don't think it has a match anywhere, and looking forward to KDE4 it seems to just get better and better End of commercial :) But that's why I use KDE. It let's me do everything I want, and quite a few things I didn't know I wanted but which are quite cool anyway

It depends on what you feel comfortable with. If you've used KDE forever, and it fits - then why fix something that isn't broken? You could give Gnome another try. I tried Gnome awhile back when I tried Debian. It has it's own plusses and minuses. I thought their top toolbar was pretty slick, and it's got a decent look to it. Besides, who names their WM after a wee fictional character? You ought to name it after something strong, like the letter K. :) -Chris

You can perfectly use GTK# and develop for .NET under KDE since any GTK program works in KDE too. The integration won't be as good as if it were QT# but using GTK-QT would reduce the difference (it's activated by default in Suse.) You might also use Crystal icons to get some more integration, at least in the look. I personally use KDE and I think it's much better than Gnome but as other suggest, it's a matter of personal taste. The best thing for someone might not always be the best thing for another one. BTW, I develop with KDevelop and C++ with KDE/QT. -- Víctor Fernández Martínez Gabinete de prensa de PoLinux [www.polinux.upv.es]. Usuario de Linux registrado #312284 en http://counter.li.org.

At first you should read the linked threads completely: http://groups.google.de/group/comp.sys.amiga.advocacy/browse_thread/thread/88cb0b63d9d2697a/8dbf1987ddee2be5?lnk=st&q=amiga+atari+flame&rnum=4&hl=de#8dbf1987ddee2be5 http://groups.google.de/group/comp.sys.amiga.games/browse_thread/thread/676658330869a07d/f51890c7b69250b7?lnk=st&q=amiga+atari+flame&rnum=6&hl=de#f51890c7b69250b7 http://groups.google.de/group/comp.sys.amiga.hardware/browse_thread/thread/435c78e47ecdfb20/719042de0188e245?lnk=st&q=amiga+atari+flame&rnum=47&hl=de#719042de0188e245 Then you could get SED and change Amiga with KDE and Gnome with Atari. After this you will exactly know the same as now. Or as you've read this thread you started ;) SCNR regards, Jens

I use neither KDE, nor Gnome. The fun thing about SUSE is that KDE and GNOME programs work without a problem when installed with YAST. houghi -- "Gee, Toto, I don't think we are in Kansas anymore."
