First off - many apologies if this is sent to the wrong list but have searched FAQ's, SDB, even read the manual and man pages and I am still stuffed. If you could suggest answers or where I could find - would be mega grateful. Would have sent query to SuSE support as a registered user but am now out of the 90 day support period. Since it's ppp that fails the interesting bits will be in /var/log/messages, since that's where ppp logs to. If you don't get any useful error messages there, try editing /etc/ppp/options and uncomment (remove the # from) the line that says 'debug'. After that, ppp should tell you more or less exactly what's going on. regards Anders On Wednesday 03 October 2001 03.33, Marc wrote:

OK, so what did pppd write to /var/log/messages? This might provide a clue. Basically, exit code 10 means some incompatibility in protocols. ISP may be too much M$ oriented. Also make sure that "debug" option is present in /etc/ppp/options file -- this provides extra amount of information. -Kastus

Quickest way to test this is using WVDIAL - try creating a wvdial.conf in /etc along the lines of; [Dialer Defaults] YaST2 configured = 0 Modem = /dev/modem Baud = 57600 Init1 = ATZ Init2 = ATQ0 X3 V1 E1 S0=0 S11=55 &C1 &D2 Init3 = Phone = <enter your ISP phone number here> Username = <your username that you log on to the ISP with> Password = <your password> Ask Password = 0 Dial Command = ATDT Stupid Mode = 1 Compuserve = 0 Force Address = Idle Seconds = 0 DialMessage1 = DialMessage2 = ISDN = 0 Auto DNS = 1 Load Predefined Prefix = None Auto Reconnect = 0 This is the one I use for my connection and it works fine. This will at least tell you whether the machine is connecting to your ISP correctly. Jon
In addition to turning on debug, check your /etc/ppp/pap.secrets and make sure your userid and password are entered correctly. You might also try the kppp dialer - it seems to use a slightly different set of ppp options, and may be more compatible with your ISP. -- Rick Green "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." -Benjamin Franklin

man pppd: 10 The PPP negotiation failed, that is, it didn't reach the point where at least one network protocol (e.g. IP) was running. It means that the modem connection was bad and both sides can not talk. You need a different init string for you modem. Try a simple "AT &F" or "AT &F1" or whatever works for you in windows. Hi; I had the exact same problem, but with Lineone (I also had this problem in KDE in redhat 7 before I moved to SuSE 7.2). Lineone explained that they use CHAP authentication, while most others use PAP. Maybe its the same for freeserve. It seams (to me) that YAST 2 sets up as PAP. What I did was use YAST 1, go to system admin, network config, configure PPP network, configure the current profile, and go to the (PAP/CHAP) Authentication mode. Deselect the PAP/CHAP (choose any of the others) and then reselect it. Save everything and exit. Now with your YAST 1 configured connection you should be able to dial up and stay connected. Hope this helps. -- ------------ Darren Harmon http://users.breathemail.net/darren.harmon1/

I found that with Lineone using Internet Dialler had more success than Kinternet. I'm sure you are going to find that Freeserve does use CHAP.
