First off - many apologies if this is sent to the wrong list but have searched FAQ's, SDB, even read the manual and man pages and I am still stuffed. If you could suggest answers or where I could find - would be mega grateful. Would have sent query to SuSE support as a registered user but am now out of the 90 day support period. Should have sorted this problem then but didn't due to lack of time, money etc.
Problem I have installed 7.1 Pro (several times) and have yet to manage to connect to the net. Help me sort this out and I can finally torch the Windoze CD!!
Details PC Spec - Intel Pentium 266 (Slot 1) on Microstar BX chipset mainboard (old but available), 128Mb RAM, 4.2Gb HDD etc, etc. Modem is KTX (Rockwell chipset) external connected to /dev/ttyS0 (Works else you wouldn't be reading this)
Do installation of 7.1 selecting default options with installation from CD Rom
At Yast Step 8 - "System Component Configuration", MODEM/ISDN/NETWORK shows: - Unknown AT Modem
Click on "Activate Network" - modem parameters are shown correctly - /dev/ttyS0 - Select ISP - UK Freeserveand select to execute Netscape after connect. Save configuration and everything appears OK.
Log in to regular user account, - click on/run kinternet, the modem tones, dial tones etc can be heard but after about 30 seconds the modem disconnects.
All settings for the ISP (telephone number, login/user name, password etc) are all correct but repeated tries just give the same result.
Displaying the log while trying to connect shows as below: - --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.41
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: AT Q0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 +D2 +FCLASS=0

--> Homepage of Freeserve: www.freeserve.net

--> pid of pppd: 8973
--> Disconnecting at Wed Oct 3 02:23:31 2001

I think I have listed everything I can think of - where do I go from here?
OK, so what did pppd write to /var/log/messages? This might provide a clue. Basically, exit code 10 means some incompatibility in protocols. ISP may be too much M$ oriented. Also make sure that "debug" option is present in /etc/ppp/options file -- this provides extra amount of information. -Kastus
