SuSE 10.1 DVD & 32 bit

I would appreciate a little tip. I can't guess/find the boot option to install 32 bit version from DVD.
When you boot the DVD and you see the installation menu, look down at the bottom of the screen and you can see some F key options One of them is F3 for "Other Options". Press F3 and then you'll see some new F key options show up including a choice for 64 or 32 bit (I think it's F6 you'll need next). C.

Thanks, But i have only 'F1 help, F2 language, F3 Text(Vesa,...) F4 DVD(NFS,...) F5 Driver' . There is no 'Other Options' (at least for me). I feel rather stupid to post such a question after many many installations of SuSE (since 6.2) Regards Zvone Z.

Hmmm that's strange... when I do the install frommy DVD I see the screens just like in this link: http://www.linuxforums.org/reviews/review_of_suse_10.1_2.html and the one I was referring to (with F3 Other Options) is the second one... Are you installing from the retail DVD? The downloaded DVD? The DVD assembled from the 6 CD isos? A DVD provided by a magazine? I don't know if these various "version" of teh DVD would make a difference, but I've never seen the options you describe, in a 10.1 installation screen. Maybe someone else has? C.

It is the retail DVD. Sorry not to mention. I am sure there must be a 'Boot Option' to select 32-bit installation. I have seen it somewhere a few weeks ago, but too much coffee and I can't find /remember it. Goooogle was not my friend. Zvone Z.

If you have no 32/64 bit option then your machine is either 32 bit only or 64 bit only. Mark

It makes sense, BUT in the meanwhile i tried to install on a PC with Intel Celeron 2.8 GHz. The F3 Other Options shows up. But upon activating it i get F3 Text (VESA,...), F4 DVD and so on. When i posted a message i have been installing on an old PC with Celeron 1000 MHz (32 bit). Well, on a 2.8 GHz CPU machine i would like to install 32-bit version from DVD (not CDs). As default x86_64 version is installed. Regards Zvone Z.

I think the Intel Celeron 2.8 GHz is a 32 bit only. Mark

This CPU has 64-GB Memory Addressability. I am not an expert, so i do not know if this CPU is this 32 bit only. I think that 32 bit CPU can't address 64 GB of RAM. But why the 64bit version is installed ? I want it to be 32 bit (from DVD)- ATI drivers, MPlayer plugins, .... Zvone Z.

uname -a spits out something like that: linux garfield 2.6.16.13-4-default *** x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux You can do: cat /proc/cpuinfo This will tell you exactly what CPU you have, but a 64-bit OS will not even boot on a 32-bit CPU. Intel Pentium 4 CPUs can be either 32-bit or 64-bit. You can force install a 32-bit OS on your system if you prefer. Additionally, 32-bit applications will run on 64-bit systems.

In a 64-bit system, you have 64-bit registers and you have 16 general

With your 64-bit system, you can install 32-bit applications, such as

Well, now i am confused. I have installed four PC from CDs (32 bit) and one from DVD. All work well. If i understand correctly i should install 64 bit versio ??? This is important as in a few days i am going to equip a few PCs (the same brand/model - Acer Power F5) with the SuSE 10.1. I have avoided 64 bit installation because of possible problems with VMware Server, running on two instances and a fuss about ATI drivers. It seems that it is easier to install them on 32 bit system and rest of SW mentioned earlier (answered). Ok, back to the origin of so called 'problem'. Is there a way to force 32 bit installation from DVD (not to handle 5 CDs) ? Ok, guys, it is time for a coffee break. Many thanks to all of you participating in this multiuser session. Regards Zvone Z.

Move cursor down to Installation Press F3 You will then get a list of options associated with function keys f1 - f6. F6 lets you install 32-bit.
I'll defer the VMWare answer to someone who may know.
Most likely on your system, you should not have a difficulty with running a
32-bit system.

Yep that means it 64 bit. Hum, All I can say is if it's selectable the boot menu will let you select it. Mark

I think the Intel Celeron 2.8 GHz is a 32 bit only.
The newer 'Prescott' core Celeron D's have x86_64 support.
sorry to have to ask this, but do you have a 64bit computer? if not, the 32 bit version may install amone :-) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos
