Out of order phenomenon in /var/log/messages
Im noticing my message file is not sequential (time wise) Does anyone know what this would happen? I get a daily email of the last 1000 lines of my messages file and am starting to see it out of order. I was looking at the logs and noticed different times dropped in, so I nuked the log and its still occurring What is this happening??? thanks rob Jun 21 23:26:26 Serina inetd[375]: smtp/tcp (2): bind: Address already in use Jun 21 23:29:00 Serina /USR/SBIN/CRON[3434]: (dizzy73) CMD (~/c_fortunes) Jun 21 23:30:00 Serina /USR/SBIN/CRON[3440]: (dizzy73) CMD (~/c_sig) Jun 21 19:33:34 Serina in.telnetd[3477]: warning: can't get client address: Connection reset by peer Jun 21 19:33:34 Serina in.telnetd[3477]: connect from unknown (unknown) Jun 21 19:33:34 Serina in.ftpd[3478]: connect from 10.54.6.2 (10.54.6.2) Jun 21 19:33:34 Serina popper[3480]: connect from 10.54.6.2 (10.54.6.2) Jun 21 19:33:34 Serina leafnode[3481]: connect from 10.54.6.2 (10.54.6.2) Jun 21 23:35:00 Serina /USR/SBIN/CRON[3485]: (dizzy73) CMD (~/c_fortunes) Jun 21 23:36:26 Serina inetd[375]: smtp/tcp (2): bind: Address already in use Jun 21 19:36:30 Serina popper[3487]: connect from 10.54.6.5 (10.54.6.5) Jun 21 23:39:00 Serina /USR/SBIN/CRON[3492]: (dizzy73) CMD (~/c_fortunes)
hi rob, maybe some programs use some timezone information which is incorrect ?? the time is quite "in order" but only has a jump +/- 4 hours. what does your bios clock say and what your linux clock ?? do you using ntp to adjust the time ? i remeber to had this effect once too, just told yast that my bios clock runs at the local time, so there are no timezone calcs to be done. greets, chris Am Freitag, 22. I am using 7.1 and running it on an INTEL Pentium III 500MHz with INTEL
motherboard. The last few times I've booted the machine, the time is wrong
on the clock at the bottom right of KDE interface. I was thinking it was
because I was booting into different versions of the OS ( I loaded both).
I haven't had much time to look into it, but the time always drifts in +/- 4
to 8 hour increments. A coincidence?
I haven't had any problems with windows 2000, NT 4.0, win 98 , Redhat 7.1,
6.2, or 7.0 with the machine and I am new to SuSE so I have a fairly simple
installation.
I don't think it happens when I just log in and out, but when I reboot the
machine. I was gonig to try booting the same OS version and see if the time
changed.
