Re: [SLE] Sound and AC97 ([SLE] Intel i810 AC97)
Hi,
You were right almost. I tried Kmix but no avail.
Then I went to Yast and under Hardware -> Sound there
were some 9 or 10 setting all set to '0' by default. I made
all of them to '100' and now I am able to hear the song.
At last I started loving SuSE :).
Have a great day.

Hi,
Thank you very much for your mail. My SuSE 8.2 is at Home. I will go home tonight try and let you know. One person suggested me to upgrade XFree but that would take some time.
One thing i would like to share with you is. With my first installation sound worked but my 2nd, 3rd installation it didnt work. My 4th installation is almost similiar to my first one but couldnt get it to work. Hope i wouldnt have to do 5th installation :).
Have a great day.

I found something about it. You have to look in the Kmix settings. Open the mixers "viadxs" and use "pcm" for the level. "master" won't work. Just try that or something else.

Hy,
I use normal my PCI sound card and not the onboard AC97, because i have problems to. But after your mail in the suse-list i look at it, and found this. Now i am using my PCI again. It's very strange with the AC97, sometimes all is working and the next moment nothing :'( So i can only tell you to look and try something in Kmix. Evan with my Ensoniq Creative PCI sound card there were some problems for a long time, so i think the have to look at it. :-(

Hi, I forgot to tell that "viadxs" must be on 100% in Kmix. Sorry Gerrit Jan karthikeyan.balasubramanian wrote:

If the system is using the ALSA drivers (almost all nowadays do), use kamix instead of kmix. kmix only knows about the old OSS interface whereas kamix uses the ALSA interface and thus presents you with quite a lot more knobs to tune. Philipp
Hi All,
I have a same problem with intel 82440MX too, when I
started KDE, I can hear the sound, but after I play
some music with xmms and I close it, then I started,
let's say kaffeine or totem to play movie, the sound
is gone.
I tried to add/remove again with yast2, when I test
the sound, I can't hear anything.
Another thing is, whatever type I choose under the
Inteli810 sound card categories, suse always give me
82440mx.
Any idea? I'm really lost now.
regards,
Vibranze

These are harmless. KDE simply for some unknown reason assumes more then one sound card and tries to initialize them. Either set the number of soundcards in KDE to one or add alias sound-service-2-3 off alias sound-service-3-3 off to /etc/modules.conf

These look interesting but don't help much. I've no experience with the i810 so I don't think I can help further. Philipp
Hi Philipp,
Thanks for reply. Actually it's already off in the
modules.conf, but now it seems ok already.
Another thing annoying me was when I played mp3
through xmms, I always heard some background sound,
kind of distortion, it's not the mp3 I believe, I
tried to set 0 to mic, line, etc, but it doesn't help,
the distortion still there, for xine or kaffeine, they
are fine.
Thanks.
Regards,
Vibranze
