Hi-- Running 9.1. I have a UPS, but it's only good for a few minutes. If I'm not near the machine, it will time out under power failure. It is very possible that I will not be here to shut down by hand. The UPS does not have a digital output. What will happen to the files, under Reiser fs, when the power goes out, and when it comes back? Should I shut off the machine when not in use, due to thunderstorms and possible power outages? It's not a server, and there's really no reason to keep it running. I just thought I'd see how it works this way. (Very well!) --doug

I've been using Reiserfs for over a year. The machine(s) have experienced their share of power outages, and I can tell you that I have never had to do anything other than boot the system(s). ext2 on the other hand was a nightmare when the power went out, and even the tools did not clear all of the file system problems that power outages caused. Reiser does come with it's own tools, but I've never had to use them. Mike

If your UPS is not connected to your system either via a serial port or ethernet and you don't have a ups daemon running, then you will suffer the same failure as if the UPS was not there, just a little later. I have 2 Liebert UPS's, but depend on only one currently, need to get some new batteries for one. The Liebert software using ttyS0 monitors the UPS and will initiate a controlled systems shutdown if the power fails and does not come back within 34 minutes. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Same as if you didn't have the UPS, just less often. With ReiserFS, the filesystem structure should not get corrupted. But you can lose data. If the data is valuable/irreplaceable, get a UPS with some kind of output, serial or Ethernet. Check for Linux compatibility before you buy. Journaling FS attempt to preserve the structure/meta-data (i.e., directory data). Logging FS attempt to preserve data and meta-data. Logging FS are slower. HTH, Jeffrey

Why not have it configured to do an automatic shut down?

How can I do that? There is NO digital output from the UPS. The first thing the computer knows is that there is no AC input anymore. --doug
