[opensuse] confusing package management: can a package exist on DVD and not online?
Hello. New opensuse user. I am used to the Ubuntu package management policy which puts most packages online with only a few on installation CD. After installed OpenSuSE 11.0 I immediately dumped my installation DVD thinking I no longer need them 'cos I should be able to pull needed packages from online. First software I want to install is Opera, my preferred browser. In "Software Management" I choose Opera and "install", then it tells me the DVD is not accessible. Since I already dumped the DVD, I go to "Software repositories" and disabled the DVD source, leaving the online oss and online non-oss enabled, thinking the package manager will pull from online instead. Then I go to "Software Management", surprisingly find the opera package could not be found. Search for Opear package returns 0 results. So what should I do? Re-burn the DVD (took me 5 days to download it!) and install Opera from DVD? I could download a copy from Opera website instead but I wonder what's OpenSuSE user's recommended way to do that. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Opera is contained in non-oss. My system never even saw a DVD (online-install) and I use Opera as my primary browser, too. In addition you should also find it in update, as it recieved some patches since 11.1 was released. Thank you. I found the reason is I already installed Opera but could find the package because it is in "Installed Packages" section instead of "Available Packages" section. I had to say it is organized a bit different than Ubuntu where packages are all together found and the ones installed has a check before it. It is nothing wrong to be different, though I (and perhaps other users) need some effort to get used to it. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Actually a search in YaST should always find all packages, whether available in the repos, installed or not. Zhang probably uses the GTK UI of YaST - the package manager there is different than the one in Qt. I found it quite confusing, too, when i tried some time ago. BTW, the rest of the yast modules look similar in both Qt and GTK UI. It's just this package management module that differs. -- cheers, jano Ján Kupec YaST team ---------------------------------------------------------(PGP)--- Key ID: 637EE901 Fingerprint: 93B9 C79B 2D20 51C3 800B E09B 8048 46A6 637E E901 ---------------------------------------------------------(IRC)--- Server: irc.freenode.net Nick: jniq Channels: #zypp #yast #suse #susecz ---------------------------------------------------------(EOF)---

I have the yast script hacked so that it uses the GTK interface (under gnome), but switches to the QT interface for the software modules. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I would advise you to go to the Opera site and download a suitable version. That is what I did. By the way, I would strongly advise against throwing away installation media. When one changes a hard drive, or a whole computer, having a DVD for re-installation an unlimited number of times is invaluable. Bad move! The DVD doubles as repair media, for example. I never get rid of it, even if I dissable it.

Post the result of "zypper lr" on a terminal. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
