does P4 hyper threading need k_smp ??
Hi, I just did a fresh SuSE 9.0 install on my new P4 hyper threading. Yast automatically installed the kernel k_smp, but with this kernel, usb and sound did not work at all. So I decided to install the k_deflt, and with this kernel, everything work like a charm. So, is k_smp needed to use hyper threading ? thanks. ********** L'ADSL A 20 EUR/MOIS********** Avec Tiscali, l'ADSL est à 20 EUR/mois. Vous pourrez chercher longtemps avant de trouver moins cher ! yes! ivan@caronte:~> uname -a Linux caronte 2.4.23-pre6 #27 SMP Mon Oct 6 00:51:13 CEST 2003 i686 unknown 11:55am up 36 days, 11:47, 1 user, load average: 0.03, 0.01, 0.00 65 processes: 64 sleeping, 1 running, 0 zombie, 0 stopped CPU0 states: 0.0% user, 0.0% system, 0.0% nice, 100.0% idle CPU1 states: 0.0% user, 0.1% system, 0.0% nice, 99.4% idle I didn't try USB, sound and stuff cos it is a server... audio was not installed, USB modules are loaded but I don't know if they work. My box has a 875P chipset, I still haven't checked if I'm using all the features it provides... I don't know if SUSE did anything special to its kernel about HT, but support is pretty new and improving. A bit newer kernel may mean apreciable improvement in HT performances. I'm going to update soon cos I'm curious to see if nforce2 support is improved too. I've some trouble with IDE speed :( I'll wait to solve them when I'll have my 9.0 box.

I've used HT on a couple of dual CPU boxes (so now 4 cpu boxes). Yes, you need an SMP kernel. Yes it works Yes, sounds works, as does USB and firewire. I noticed osme odd things with multi window accelrated OpenGL though. with the 9.0 release these did not reappear

Sorry, no idea about nforce
I'll wait to solve them when I'll have my 9.0 box.

thanks.
Even new mantel's kernel did not solve usb and sound problem I had when using smp kernel. This is very strange, because all drivers where correctly loaded (usb and sound). Maybe a Bios bug. So, I just recompiled kernel 2.4.23-rc1 with smp support, and now usb works well. I still need to install alsa driver.
