Disappointing 9.0 Pro AMD64 DVD install
Well folks, I've been around Linux since the 0.98 kernel days and I've never had a more frustrating install. I've noticed from the lists that I'm not alone, with a lot of suggestions ranging from checking the media to castrating chickens under a full moon, but no one solution seems sufficient. I've tried manually specifying which drive was the cdrom, removing the CD drive from the same IDE chain, verifying the media, changing the drivers, and even doing an FTP install, all of which claimed that I had no packages available for installation. Finally I had to create a partition, copy from the DVD onto it (when will it be possible to install without installing windows first? I tried it from rescue mode and that didn't work either!), and installing from it. All in all I spent about 20 hours getting this loaded. My tech support case is still pending. And have I mentioned how useful the FAQ's are? If this OS is ever to catch on like it can and should, there need to be a couple of things happen: 1. When you ship only on DVD, the DVD install should work. Period. This wasn't a download.. I paid money for it. The lists suggest that this prolem has been around for a while, so the support should be better. 2. When you have as many problems with a DVD install as this list indicates, it's a good idea to condense these suggestions into an FAQ or a knowledge base entry. As of 4 this morning it wasn't. With the demise of consumer Red Hat, there's a window of opportunity open here... especially in the AMD64 arena. I plan on using the product for a while, but that will change if future experiences are like this one. And I still don't know what the problem actually was... Dave

Never tried that one. Are we turning to voodoo?

For some, myself included, the problem seemed to go away if the dvd was switched from secondary slave to secondary master. I used my installation support and they mentioned starting the install with hdd=ide-cd, but I never tried it because I switched my drives around. Unfortunately I didn't save it/ Someone also solved their problem when they noticed that they also had a cd in the cd drive(hdc). After they removed the cd the dvd could install from secondary slave. I agree workarounds should not have to happen, but at least I got it to work after rearraging my drives. -- E.F.Maurer Using SuSE 9.0 Pro

You need to castrate the chicken under a new moon not a full moon.

I tried rearranging the drives. I tried removing the second CD-ROM altogether. No difference.

Was this with a DVD drive, or a DVD/CDRW combo drive. I experienced problems with an LG combo drive DVD install and was told to try upgrading the firmware, but after the Mandrake DVD problem with LG drives I suspect there may be some weirdness in some combo drives. If yours is only a DVD drive (and not an LG), then this probably doesn't apply. It is possible the problem though lies in the drives firmware. Joe, the DVD is a LG DVD/CDRW combo GCC-4480. Sorry, did you say updating the firmware fixed the trouble? Might be worth a try. K. If you can find an update, I would try. It does appear that LG makes non-standard drives, if you have read about the Mandrake fiasco. My guess is they have cut too many standards in their effort to make an affordable drive. I have learned my lesson though. BTW, I had to install from the CDs (this was 8.2). It would start to install and just before it was to load the packages to be installed, it couldn't read from the drive, and couldn't proceed any further. If you intend this to reach SUSE, *please* report it via http://www.suse.de/feedback. Philipp
David, if you would be so kind as to post the solution from if SuSE IT should it come. I had the very same problem with 8.2 and my DVD drive (LG) finally having to resort to the many CD's to get up and running. This time I believe the DVD has stuff the CD's don't so it's not an option. In any event, why package a DVD when only select few can install from it.. I am amazed that this problem has not been resolved.
