Hi, Is there any way to configure Yast2 (SuSE 7.1) to go via a proxy server for its 'Online' update ftp connection? Cheers Phil

I'm interested and that sounds like a good solution. Perhaps that way we can keep the SuSE lists genuinely suse-centric

I agree. My message filters have been getting a workout lately! I'm for 'suse-centric' Suse lists. How about suse-linux-ot-e (or something) on the SuSE server? It's obvious alot of people on this list want to read news and engage in discussions on M$ or linux advocacy related issues. I can see that these discussions could be more enjoyable among SuSE users here than other places. It would be great if SuSE could provide a place for the SuSE community to follow and discuss these topics if they choose.

I thought about that, but now that that enterprising person have stepped up and offered to host that list, I would rather save the SuSE bandwith for SuSE related things like ftp etc. -- Mads Martin Joergensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort." -- A. Would adding a new list make any difference? Having been with this list since SuSE 5.1, I have seen the occasional spurt of OT posts, followed by a flood of complaints, possible solutions and anti-solutions, only to see the list calm down after a short while. It might be better to hang tight and wait. Christopher Reimer
Being guilty of posting many replies and opinions related to the off topic subjects I have to say the I fully agree with Mads regarding bandwidth. I don't get the felling that he objects to the posting on a personal basis, it is rather based on a logic of bandwidth usage. I would love to have a venue to discuss and debate these issues. However, being a new and proud SuSE advocate. I must honestly say the Mads has a more than valid point. We mustn't forget that the primary rationale for the list is to help users and the SuSE/Linux community with issues related to the software. Market issuse might be more appropriate on a site/list geared to that. Just MHO. Curtis On Thursday 21 June 2001 07:34 pm, Mads Martin Jørgensen wrote:

*applause* Thanks Chris I'm afraid I'll get flamed for this, but I'm going to say it anyway: Mads and you other admins, now that we actually have an off-topic mailing list, could we please enforce the on-topic-ness of this one? I mean, let's have it official: no OT's and no news on the SuSE-Linux-e mailing list. Everything that's not fairly SuSE-centric (including things like my frequent requests for help with apache and bash scripts ;-) ) should be handled on the new list. I'm convinced if we do not enforce it we'll be getting off-topics on this list again in no time. Please? What? You must be joking! Seeking help for Apache and/or bash in SuSE is NOT OT IMO. To me it has been rather weird to see how occupied this list has been recently with all that anti--M$ propaganda, that to me is OT and not a good sign for newcomers. M$ v -rest of the world of OS's is an interesting and a serious issue well worth lots of discussing, but to me it doesn't look good to fill this list with that. A good example is the linux.nu site in Sweden that got a discussion forum with a seperate list for discussing M$. Cheers, ei

Mads would have to define it...Anything software/hardware related to SuSE should suffice IMVHO. That does include Apache...And any questions regarding how conforment SuSE is to the LSB. Microtrolls licensing, even gpl related, is not really SuSE.. But apache is :-) Matt

Now that there is a list specifically for Linux evangelism and news stories, those of us that like that stuff should subscribe to it, and SuSE should put it right there next to their other lists, so that people know where to go for it, imho. Have a great night! -Steven

Yeah. Does this list have a FAQ like some newsgroups and IRC channels do? It would be nice if newbies new that there's a separate list for off-topic things. Without having to be told :-)

Definately. Please SuSE, put it on the SuSE Mailing Lists page! Question: what all will go under the label OT? Obviously news stories, general Linux discussion, etc. But what about stuff like diagnosing a problem in KDE, or setting up Samba, and all those other great things? Does this mean SLE will become a boring place that only discusses how to use YaST and what the latest version of SuSE will have in it? -Tim -- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. My take? Posts concerning anything in any Suse distro are on-topic. Anything else is off-topic. Rudder

I've found many of the [OT]s to be useful since the SuSE community seems to have a bunch of people who are well-informed about them. I'd be more concerned if they weren't labelled as such, since those folks who aren't interested can easily page past them. But on that subject, how about an [MS] label (Microsoft? Multiple sclerosis? Any difference?) for MS-related posts that have no direct relationship to SuSE Linux? Paul

Instead of having 75% of the mails on the suse-linux-e ! mailinglist tagged, I would prefer either one of these: 1) Having this mailinglist beeing about (SuSE) Linux in general with a *small* amount of OT postings. 2) Having this mailinglist beeing about (SuSE) Linux in general with all OT postings on another mailinglist. I would rather use the bandwith on serving people who wants to use our ftp-server. -- Mads Martin Joergensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort." -- A. It'd be interesting to know what the breakdown is between SuSE Linux-specific posts, Microsoft-related posts, and other OT posts. My guess is something like 70/20/10. There's another way to look at the OT posts: this list discusses how to use a computer that's running SuSE Linux. (Remarkably few OT's are about RedHat, Debian, etc.). The people who can solve Linux-related problems often can solve other related problems. My own experience is that the number of SuSe-related but uninteresting (to me) posts far exceeds the number of )T but uninteresting (to me) posts. I think that any attempt to break off a chunk of the list for OT items would fail because the new list would be too unfocused. All this is subjective, of course. Paul

I agree. SLE is a wonderful environment where everyone from the newest Linux user to the veteran *nixer can focus on our favorite topics: SuSE, Linux, and Linux vs. MS. Generally, the signal-to-noise ratio is very good, and I bet most people will find few posts that are so OT that most of the users do not find them interesting. EXACTLY!!! Hey guys ... why are you all crying like someone is dead? Well, noone is. Actually everybody is alive and feeling better than ever. But you have to take into account that all of the *excessive* OT postings almost made me leave the list.
