I've been looking over the recent status of wine. http://www.winehq.com/ The way things look to me is that these great OSS heroes are marching through the desert in search of the holy grail ... alone. It would seem they have made great strides since last I looked. I am not an experienced coder, yet. They need help! If anybody reading this happens to frequent other lists, please spread the word. Some people think VM ware is the answer. That is nothing but a Band-Aid. The solution that wine provides to OSS is a completely open source win32 works alike. With wine you don't need Microsoft OS code. Wine is the AMD of operating systems. There is nothing in the OSS community that more directly challenges Microsoft's monopoly on the desktop. I have lots of cool tools I use in NT that just aren't available to me in Unix/Linux. Many users of Microsoft environments would be more likely to try linux if they could take their favorite win32 programs with them. On a similar note, the Mozilla http://www.mozilla.org folks need some bug catchers, and bug killers. They are looking to release a "beta" and still have a long way to go in order to get a stable product. I am very busy and can't help either camp much. If anybody has time, please contribute. Mozilla is the poster child of Microsoft's monopolistic victims. It represents the most complete, cross platform, browser in existence today. I read an article that said Back Orifice 2000 (BO2K) source code looked just like VNC with the password code removed. If this is true, then BO2K would be possible, but only if installed by an inept sysadmin - you know, those guys that use their root account for routine e-mail. I think the probability of success of a BO2K server running under Unix/Linux is small (there is a large difference between Unix SysAdmins and NT admins), so the cDc hasn't wasted their time on it. Their time is better spent violating Windows users. -- George Toft http://www.georgetoft.com Certified NACSE Senior Network Specialist, Master of Science Information Systems Linux/Unix System Administrator Web Master Network Administrator --> Looking for the right job in Ontario, California <-- __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Mike, Thanks for the back up. The reason I got on that rant was because I was trying to view a Rational Rose tutorial CD. I had to boot into NT to get the *.exe to run. It ran fine on my system at work, unfortunately it crashes on my NT here at home. I would rather have it run on my Linux boot. As for tools I like: http://www.textpad.com/ http://www.ultraedit.com/ Many gadgets that come with hardware such as sound cards, and digital cameras. The list is not extensive, but it's long enough to frustrate me. I'm sure there are other packages that belong on this list, my first cup of coffee hasn't kicked in yet, so I'm drawing a blank. Some people will tell me there are OSS tools that do the same things. Indeed there are, but they never seem to give me exactly what I'm looking for. For example, xemacs will do virtually anything, but it is in a paradigm of its own. The learning curve is steeper than most programming languages, and even when you learn what it can do, it doesn't support the same key strokes and etc. that I am used to. kwrite is getting there, but it is still a bit weak. Another problem is that sometimes I'm forced to use Win32 products because of my job. I would really like to be able to just stick in a CD and have at it. Steve Mike Kenzie wrote:

Have you tested NEdit (www.nedit.org) already? Quote from its manual: NEdit is a standard GUI (Graphical User Interface) style text editor for programs and plain-text files. Users of Macintosh and MS Windows based text editors should find NEdit a familiar and comfortable environment. NEdit provides all of the standard menu, dialog, editing, and mouse support, as well as all of the standard shortcuts to which the users of modern GUI based environments are accustomed. For users of older style Unix editors, welcome to the world of mouse-based editing! Try J-Pilot. It does everything that the 3Com software does, except e-mail. Also, J-Pilot does not have the 4000 character limit on memo records, so you can pack more info into a memo record. Since the Palm tries to enforce this limit, you can't add to a stuffed record, but you can still view it and delete characters. The March issue of Hawaiian HardDrive should have an article on how to get the Palm Pilot to work under Linux. It's also in the Palm Pilot how-to.
