Hello World!
I just got my mplayer up and running on my Suse 7.2. I can play a lot of my
mpg's, avi's and stuff, but I can't play any of my dvd's. I installed css,
and I'm sure it's not the problem. It seems that no matter what I do, I can't
get it to read from the dvd-drive.
Here's what I did:
mbs03@paladin:~ > mplayer -vo x11 -vm -dvd /dev/dvd
/dvd/video_ts/vts_01_1.vob MPlayer 0.17a-IdegCounter (C) 2000-2001 Arpad

Check the permissions on the /dev/sr1 device to make sure that you have permission - you might need to add your user to the relevant group. Check that the link is correct by inserting a CDROM into the DVD drive and as root: mount -tiso9660 /dev/dvd /mnt If you can do the mount OK, then the link is correct. Don't forget to unmount afterwards. umount /mnt -- David Smith Tel: +44 (0)1454 462380 (direct) STMicroelectronics Fax: +44 (0)1454 617910 1000 Aztec West TINA (ST only): (065) 2380 Almondsbury Home: 01454 616963 BRISTOL Mobile: 07932 642724 BS32 4SQ Work Email: Dave.Smith@st.com Home Email: David.Smith@ds-electronics.co.uk

I checked up on that "/dev/dvd"-thing. The file is a link to "/dev/sr1".
What are the permission on /dev/sr1? You, as a regular user, need to have the right permissions. I guess there should be at least one "r" in the group section of /dev/sr1, something like: brw-r----- 1 root disk 11, 0 Jan 19 2001 /dev/sr0 Hope it helps, Alvaro Novo
Hi again. Thanks a lot. It worked by changing the file permissions. But now there's another problem: If I run mplayer as a normal user it writes: ioctl FIBMAP: Operation not permitted Hint: run mplayer as root! DVD: path_to_lba() failed. I then try as root with sudo or root Himself: Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server vo: couldn't open the X11 display! Sorry, selected video_out device is incompatible with this codec. This :0.0-problem also ocours when I run wineas root. It's a display variable missing for root. It seems like a no-win situation. Any ideas? Kind regards. Michael B. Sørensen Denmark

do
xhost +local:0.0 su and run it
Don't forget to close the x connection, xhost -
sux -c mplayer will do everything in one command. Also you may just add your user to the group disk. -Kastus
Hope it helps,
