Re: [SLE] 'Etikette' on the German List / was: Re: [SLE] FAQ
Actually, I would like to see it. Just because it gets published does not mean that it will be implemented. At least not in
a form which is objectionable to this board.

Depends on your view ;-) I'm currently translating the current version and will post it here. (...)
Hi Philipp,
Translate what you like to, this is a free country and should stay that way, but please keep it for yourself since we do not need this here. This list works fine without, and I do not know how many expatriates are here on this list besides Oli and me (though I'd be interested to learn).
Cheers ...

Yes, if it's implemented then we get yell at people who think 128 character lines are OK ;) I have lots of ideas for something like this (my Gnus killfiles did this when I used to read usenet). We can block: o known-to-be-bad email clients o people who use the "Jeopardy" style of follow-ups (i.e., the original text is pasted below the message and gives the effect of having the answer come before the question) o messages with high quoting ratios (i.e., the amount of old, quoted text divided by the amount of new text) o people who post a new question, with different subject, as a reply to a previous post. This is absolutely maddening to anyone who reads the list with a modern, i.e. threaded, mail reader. Only then people be forced to resort to flames for usual stuff (poor message formatting, asking questions without sufficient information or research, off topic stuff, etc.). Maybe we can even get down to 50 messages/day! -- -ckm
Perhaps you might like to explain how to start a new thread. There is nothing about that in the faq I received. All it states is to reply to all. I was under the impression that if you remove the complete subject line that would start a new subject. Regards, David

No, you'd also need to remove the In-Reply-To header if you wanted to start a new thread by replying a message in another thread. [Btw, I was being somewhat fatuous with my "list"] -- -ckm

Yepp ;-) One of the guidelines would certainly be line lengths less then 80 characters.
I have lots of ideas for something like this (my Gnus killfiles did this when I used to read usenet). We can block:

Which would be? Outlook itself isn't a bad email client, only the default settings are nowhere near acceptable.
o messages with high quoting ratios (i.e., the amount of old, quoted text divided by the amount of new text)
How do differentiate that from a full quote done on purpose? But I wouldn't really go as far as blocking as that would IMHO be too hard a measure. I'd really prefer some common guidelines that people could be pointed to.

Well, I said this came from usenet and there are objectively bad newsreaders (anything in webbrowser fro instance). Is Outlook the one with the broken encoding that sticks a '=' at the end of every record? Yeah, I think that would have to go ;)

You don't. There are so few legitimate reasons for quoting something in full, especially on a mailing list where you don't have to worry about your nntp losing posts, that it can be safely ignored.

They're everywhere, but no reads them anyway.

Yes, I was joking b/c some many people seemed terrified of the German Etikette list that I was just having fun with them...imagine the ml-admin wearing jack-boots and carrying a riding crop :) -- -ckm
