NOTE: Please do not email me any attachments with Microsoft extensions. They are deleted on my ISP's server before I ever see them, and no bounce message is sent. Some people use 'parted' (available on the knoppix cd) or PQMagic 8+ to do the job. If you use the latter, you may want to delete your swap file, first --using the proper method from the My Computer | Properties area, defrag your drive using anything besides 'Doze defrag, then you will doubtless have a good resize. I used Norton's Speed Disk for the defrag since it truly defrags --including free space-- unlike 'Doze defrag utility.
Others may have more suggestions. That's the beauty of this forum. ;-) HTH... -- ..."Yogi" CH Namasté Yoga Studio "If music be the food of love, why can't rabbits sing?"

U might have better look with some of the "utility distributions" there's around. Get a picture of things at www.distrowatch.com

What filesystem is the Windows partition? I've always used Partition Magic - I bought it a couple of years ago and it has proved its worth many times over. However, when I got my zd7000, which had a single large NTFS partition, the SuSE installer (9.1) did offer to resize it, so I let it go ahead - unfortunately, it completely hosed the Windows installation (or fortunately, depending on your point of view!). I have found that most of the partitioning tools available are fine for FAT32 partitions but NTFS is a bit more risky. Also, whilst some of the proprietary Windows tools will resize, you end up with a partition table that cannot be read by some Linux installers. So, I really think that the best solution is: - back up any data you have on your Windows installation - format the drive with your SuSE installer, creating a primary FAT32 partition for Windows at the beginning of the drive, then abort the installation after that is done - reinstall Windows on to that partition - install SuSE HTH David

It's an NTFS disk. Partition Magic says it can do it. It tries to do it, but errors on the reboot. I've also tried to convert it to a FAT32 disk, and it errors on the reboot with that too. I hate paying $70 for something that doesn't work as advertised. It just won't do it. -- Jim Sabatke Hire Me!! - See my resume at http://my.execpc.com/~jsabatke Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons, for you are crunchy and good with ketchup. I used Vcom's Drive Works, a comericial product that is relatively cheap.
It knows Linux file systems, as well as just about all invented. I used a
3-yr old version on my new HP zd7168cl. Since I wanted to be able to read
and write XP files from Linux, I needed to reinstall XP on a FAT32
partition, so I essencially wiped the drive. For read-only of XP files,
XP can be left on NTFS (default for XP), in which case resizing can also
be done by Drive Works..

I just resized another NTFS on an HP laptop. I used ntfsresize and fdisk with much trepidation but it went smoothly and worked fine. First I did the windows defrag several times to get everything down to managable, then ntfsresize, noting the beginning and ending of the current partitions, followed by fdisk. Then I installed SuSE9.1 and they both play nicely now. Didn't lose a file and the owner is using it as if it was never touched! If you decide to go this route, print out the man page and follow the instructions verrrrrrry carefully. ra

Me too, though not *quite* recently.

I only ran the defrag once. Of course the 'ntfsresize' and 'fdisk' mentioned are linux tools, so one needs to boot some sort of working linux system. I used Knoppix. In the end I didn't need the data backup, but I strongly suggest having one, before you attempt this.
If you decide to go this route, print out the man page and follow the instructions verrrrrrry carefully.
Indeed. Cheers, /Jon -- Just say "know!"
