RE: [SLE] 8.2 ftp-installation not working behind a firewall?
HI All, Two weeks ago there was this thread which ended without a proper answer in my opinion. Installing 8.2 via ftp is giving an error message about not being able to read package data from the installation media. I read the postings on the original thread so I decided to eliminate the firewall. You might call me crazy but I downloaded the entire 6.4G from an ftp mirror and set it up on my own ftp server. This means that there is no firewall in the way. Ftp access is very fast and is working well. Imagine my surprise (especially after 48 hours of downloading) that the error is still coming up. This means two things IMHO: 1. The firewall is not an issue 2. There is a problem with the files in the ftp servers/mirrors or with YAST2 Any idea as to how to solve it or what the problem actually is? Regard Mark A. I downloaded that whole thing too. Then instead of doing a ftp-install you install it from your harddrive, at least that's what I did. The only thing that changed from 8.1 to 8.2 is that Yast2 now apparently uses passive-ftp, whereas 8.1 did not (according to the ftpadmin@suse.com). There have been people who installed via ftp, so the problem is not as simple as there being an error on the servers. In my case I think it is because port 21 is open but everything else shutdown, so that Yast2 can establish a connection to the ftp, thinks it can use it and then fails to open the data-port. It wasn't me who set it up like that! Sven -- << s.burmeister@lancaster.ac.uk * sven.burmeister@gmx.de >> :: Have a look at Germany :: http://www.lancs.ac.uk/ug/burmeist/
Hi, What FTP server have you installed?. I had the same problem with vsftpd. If this is your case, please comment the line #connect_from_port_20=YES from /etc/vsftpd.conf After doing that, ftp installation succeded. Guillermo. On Wednesday 28 May 2003 12:46, Mark A. Tagliaferro wrote:

Passive ftp is used by default now which was the most common yast-firewall problem. The error you're getting, which I filed a bug about, most likely means that the connection failed for some reason (e.g., the server isn't accepting new connections, your local network is broken, etc.). -- -ckm
