My daughter and I have both SuSe 7.3 with Opera 5 installed. We have both the same internet bank connection. I am able to do my banking business, my daughter can not make contact with the bank. Opera version 6 and Konquerer do not work with this connection for whatever reason. I want to compare our opera setups and would like to know which files contain the important configuration information. Somebody can help there? --
There is a directory in your home directory :
.opera (with the period in front of it)
This contains all of the personal opera configuration files.

Just so you are aware, Opera has long standing issues with javascript in web pages. It is very fast and I like Opera, but when I do my online banking, I use a late model mozilla (0.97+). You could try that if you get stuck with Opera. Best Regards, Keith -- LPIC-2, MCSE, N+ wielder of vi(m), an ancient, dangerous and powerful magic free your mind, and your OS will follow

The worst thing is that "everybody" expect you to use IE, and if your lucky then they'll support Netscape, and yes some even Opera. I had problems with my bank nothing happened in my Opera 6 TP3, just blank screen , and when I looked at the source it checked which browser I was using: if IE4 then if IE5 then if IE5.5 then if IE6 then if Netscape then if Opera5 then else scre** you Mozilla didn't work, Konquerer didn't work, but Netscape 6 did (I had to install it just for that purpose only). Is sad that if you don't use IE you'll be frozen out on the net... (98% of all our clients use IE so we support that only) regards Jónas
Just to add my 2 cents to this browser conversation. I went to Capital One's site yesterday for the first time to check my open credit on my CC. Netscape 6, Mozilla and Konqueror are forbidden to be used on this companies website. I did get in with an older beta of Opera6 which instills SO much confidence in me. I called their 1-800 and I was told that Netscape 6.X and Mozilla DO not support 128bit SSL connections and therefore I couldn't use them. It was for security reasons. I proceeded to tell the woman that if she wanted to discuss security ..we were going to have a "coming to Jesus" meeting because that's what my job pays me that high 5 figure salary for...and we discussed it. She said I could "write an email" I said I was not going to do that and that if their service was so behind and so backwards that they would let IE w/ it's many security holes and Netscape 4.X into their site I was going to be writing a letter of cancelation to their company and I was going to transfer the balence of my CC from them to another card. I told I just don't feel safe using such a backwards financial institute. Lets just face it..the MCSD's and lazy webdevelopers have taken over the web...it's a big ole POS. You can spoof the id of the browser and it should work. You can have mozilla identify itself as IE or whatever and it should work, but I wouldn't. I would just change banks. * Jonas Helgi Palsson (jonas@mi.uib.no) [020224 16:32]: ->On Friday 22 February 2002 19:50, Keith Winston wrote: ->> On Fri, Feb 22, 2002 at 10:00:59PM +0700, Constant Brouerius van Nidek ->wrote: ->> > My daughter and I have both SuSe 7.3 with Opera 5 installed. This is regretably what appears to be happening over time. Too many sites are
supporting IE as a primary browser with the other's not supported 100%. Good
sites use standards, but the developers of many sites are getting lazy and writing
code for IEeeee (scream like your hair is on fire, because it is)and not doing a
good job of testing for compatibility with other browsers.
Isn't it great, the very people who complain the most about the cost of viri (viruses)
in their organizations are the same people who encourage the use of insecure
products which aid in the spread of those very same viruses.
I personally do not use IE, even in Windows, and refuse to support sites which
are not compatible with the browsers which I use (Opera and Mozilla).
OK, enough of my rant.

Agreed, we cannot become lazy and complacent like these Web site developers.
We must vote with out feet if necessary.
Lord, if for no other reason, we need to stop these damn viruses which
IE/Outlook/IIS encourage (I am tired of getting hundreds of nimda and code red

This thread is very interesting and helpful. I'm a Capital 1 customer too,
but haven't tried to reach their tech people. To take the lazy way out, I
shuffle to another room to a winxp machine to browse there.
My netscape browser on my Linux station doesn't display fonts as nicely as
the xp does. Plus it's not all OS and browser fault. xp has the new Mag 19"
monitor and I got relegated the older 17" monitor. So some of it is just
monitor performance, in my case. I need to spend some time getting the fonts
to look better. Copy some TT fonts over. Is there a short answer to what
'anti-alias' is in terms of font? It seems like such a non-descriptive,
non-intuitive term to me.
I bank with my credit union and they're going to web based online banking
and leaving their 1-800 # and terminal access on March 1. I have no idea how
that will play out in terms of browser access. I thought the 800# was so
much more secure than a web interface. The 800 number even worked calling it
from Germany last summer. Seems to me like they're moving backwards. But
they think they're moving forwards.

When I received a parking ticket in Vancouver BC, for parking between 2 locals who got away in time, their web site actually apologized for not yet supporting the first browser I attempted to use to pay my fine. Here in the US, the fafsa government web site gave me a big list of supported OS and browser combinations, apparently because it detected that I was running linux. None of the supported combinations involved linux, although it seems that Opera and Netscape are supported adequately. One of the MS web sites allows me to log in with Opera, but proceeds to tell me I must download software! I'm sure it's guaranteed not to run under Wine, given Bill G's attitude toward free software. I find the position of American linux shops harder to understand, when they reject resumes written in Word97 compatible format simply because they detect that they have come from a linux system. I'm fortunate enough to have landed a job which involves both Windows and linux work, but none of the engineering which I did for 30 years, so please don't consider this a rant mode.

Please don't shoot me, but I just messed around choosing several options for about 15 minutes with no reponse issues what so ever.
I'm using the following:
Mozilla 0.9.8
CrossOver plugin Sun's Java V1.4 Macromedia Flash 5.0
I'm not sure why I would have better luck then anyone else. Give this combo a try. The CrossOver plugin costs though and I'm not sure that it makes a difference on the site.
When I first went to this site (Moz .9.8, Flash 5.0, Java 1.3.1), I only got a page saying " Thankyou for visiting /JOBLIST./ " After seeing all the success stories, I decided to check a bit more. I tried re-enabling the Java option in Preferences>Advanced>Scripts and Windows>Open unrequested windows (I disabled to kill those annoying ads :-) ), and voila, it opened and works fine. Maybe Peter, you also have this disabled in your preferences. HTH
I just tried the webite with Opera 6.01 with it identifying itself as IE 5.5 and had no problems. This is regretably what appears to be happening over time. Too many sites are supporting IE as a primary browser with the other's not supported 100%. Good sites use standards, but the developers of many sites are getting lazy and writing code for IEeeee (scream like your hair is on fire, because it is)and not doing a good job of testing for compatibility with other browsers.

Thanks to all who responded to my complaint about http://www.joblist.com.au, specially to Fergus Wilde who made me aware of the html validator; what a great and useful tool this is. Also many thanks to Joe Morris, who made me check the settings of konqueror. When I dis-enable Plugins, the site becomes viewable. I usually leave javascript on but turn Java itself off. The part where joblist loops is the netscape plugin which gets installed when one installs netscape. This plugin appears to be used by Konqueror as well. Based on the analysis results of the html validator, joblist is obviously not HTML compliant. This leads me to a few general questions. Is there not an RFC that governs the rules of HTML and is that RFC not to be considered as a sort of a standard one would normally adhere to? What is the use of providing contents via plugins if the plugin has to be turned off to view the site? Why should I have to re-configure browser settings to view one site and then have to re-configure it again fto view another one? Again, thanks to all that responded. The jobhunt is seriously on now. Hi all, well this is the result of running the complainant's page (http://www.joblist.com.au) past the html validator (great tool) supplied by the world wide web consortium at http://validator.w3.org/:

Sorry! A fatal error occurred when attempting to transcode the character encoding of the document. Either we do not support this character encoding yet, or you have specified a non-existent character encoding (often a misspelling).
The detected character encoding was "iso".
The error was "".
If you believe the character encoding to be valid you can submit a request for that character encoding (see the feedback page for details) and we will look into supporting it in the future."
They must have some kind of equal ops policy, and certainly should have an access policy for visually impaired / otherwise disabled readers. These pages must breach it. I'd suggest all interested Aussies bombard the relevant government departments so that they produce valid html and preferably so they rate with Bobby as well:

This page makes it clear that: "Many people with disabilities use special Web browsers, such as one that reads text out loud using a speech synthesizer for blind users."

Peter, I couldn't resist the challenge. I did get their site easily, found it well designed and readable. The very fist line says "Joblist is the Western Australian State Government online jobs board." My Mozilla (rv.0.9.4) isn't the best or newest, but didn't have any problem navigating the site. SuSE-7.3 now with kernel 2.4.16. This gives me the opportunity to mention something I read today: a very well-presented analysis of several browsers, from Beonex to SkipStone. Get it at "Browser Comparison," page 88, March 2002, www.linuxjournal.com. Regards, gr (in sunny, warm Florida) **"In war, it counts not who's right, but who's left."** /Ann Landers/
