Hey gang, Just for the heck of it I did a 'w' in a console and this is what came up: 11:41am up 1 day, 3:11, 3 users, load average: 1.01, 1.05, 1.01 USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT <me> :0 console Sat 8am ? 0.00s ? - <me> pts/0 - Sat 8am 27:00m 0.00s ? - <me> pts/1 - 11:41am 0.00s 0.04s 0.01s w What the heck is this? I'm the only user. What's pts? Is this maybe something that's using some RAM without my knowledge? Using procman, it shows seti using cpu cycles, and everything else is using RAM (which is what's supposed to be happening with linux, correct?), but why or what is it that's making it show 3 users on here? Any suggestions please, will be appreciated. John -- Computers and air-conditioners are the same... Open up windows and they're useless.
yes it's right, a "pts" is a "pseudo-terminal", so each shell you open will equal 1 pts, and some programs will also generate a pts themselves. the :0 will be the X-server itself. the only time it would be weird is if you saw something in the user column other than you. w shows "who is logged in, and what they are doing". Hi Ewan, Good deal then. Thanks. I wasn't really worried about it, just real curious. You explained nicely. Take care and be well. John __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! - Official partner of 2002 FIFA World Cup http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com
