A bit of poking about in FF Preferences shows me that, in the browser's list of defaults for filetypes, SWF appears, but not SPL, although the plugin claims to be able to run both. I don't see a way to add a filetype to this list. I have a similar problem with MPlayer, by the way, which is capable of running some WMP film clips from websites, but not all. A local newspaper site, for example links to such clips on external sites (which MPlayer handles beautifully), and also some of its own clips, which display only in what might be called a one-buttocked fashion. I wrote to the newspaper's webmaster asking to know what is the filetype of the latter, but have not been honored with a reply. I have WINE on my system, but I hesitate to try loading WMP into it, just as I don't invite other viruses in. But, for all I know, this too is only a matter of adding a filetype to the list of defaults. -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

For some strange reason this function does not exist in Firefox (it was there in mozilla). You will need to install the mime-edit extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4498

The questions which Stan should be asked to answer are: which version of Firefox is he running and where did he install it from (from openSUSE or directly from mozilla.org); and are the symlinks in ~home/.mozilla/plugins pointing to the correct files? I wanted to see whether the object he wanted to view is with a mimetype application/x-director which the plugin doesn't support. Charles

Kai did ask me for that, and I apologized for not including it in my original query. The browser is Firefox v1.0.0.12, it came as an automatic update from openSuSE. I didn't realize that there are symbolic links from plugins to the browser, but I assume (naively?) that they must be correct if About:plugins sees them. How to check on this?
Once this is known, "Time and the little grey cells, will always [solve the problem]!" :-) .
I too am an aficionado of Hercule Poirot, but I do not slick my hair down, wax my moustache, or pur my beard in a snood overnight. Will that make a problem? (But I do drink Belgian "Stella Artois" beer by choice.)

I'll post two, because the reuslts do not seem consistent. The newspaper site I mentioned is http://jpost.com; it is all in English. Find the place with a link to "JPost videos". The screen that it brings up is a short herald about the US election process, and there is a long menu of clips to the right. Most of these are from TV-1 (they are labeled "iba". If you click on them MPlayer will swear to you that it is "connecting", but after a while it will recycle to the herald. At the moment, only one of the menu items is from the newspaper itself, and that behaves exactly like those from iba. (Sometimes they have clips from other external sources, and those are displayed properly.) For comparison, you can view directly http://www.iba.org.il/media/?liveRadio=14, which is Radio-2. The two columns of icons at the left are audio programs you (presumably) could hear -- they don't start for me. If you click on the button marked "Foreign Languages", you can see more of these in many languages (Arabic, Tigrit, Russian, and even English). Above these is a screen for th recorded English-language news from the TV-1 network (the news reader is an immigrant from Oklahoma City, so you won't have trouble with his speech). This clip , unlike offerings from the same source but viewed through the newspaper, displayed beautifully by MPlayer. -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I get the same thing. I found this, too, with some quicktime videos on a university website. sometimes the format works and other times it doesn't. Here, the behavior I have described is entirely consistent. Their own clips and those of the IBA never work. Sometimes them publish clips from memritv.org, which as recently as last week worked well for me, but now is putting up the shockwave complaint.
Typically, i've found it is the fault of the website author. They often put in unnecessary tags that make video not work.
Web designers are in general an ignorant and childish lot, that think they have to use every new gimmick simply because it exists. The could not care less about users. I am not sure that they understand that there ARE any users, or that they have been hired in order to make it possible for users to see something.
I also tried it with ies4linux and that didn't get me much farther.

This is true. I goofed. Actually, I had done as you did, with another source, but the simple trick slipped my mind yesterday, because too many things were going on at the same time. It does NOT work, however, with the jpost videos, as verified by Charles Chan, who says he has told the developers of MPlayer about the fact. You didn't find the video link on that site? The easy one to find is on the front page, just under the large photograph near the top of the page. You have to click on "JPost videos". Or you could do CTRL-F to search for "video". That brings up some extraneous occurences in the little frames at the sides, but if you do "Next" a few times, you get to the right one.

I'm not sure (I don't have a TV) if they put in a Hebrew soundtrack or if there are subtitles. But I am pretty sure it would not be on any of the iba networks, but on cable and satellite providers. But why would Hebrew audio be surprising?
