Linux is tied into the unix way of thinking (I come from a dos/windows windows world) and the tools and metaliity are just diffrent.
Some of us think that is a good thing.

That was just my piont <grin> I did not mean / intend to knock the unix way of doing things. I was simply pioting out that its a diffent way , with meny diffent tools , and that there is a much higher learning curve to it . Thats coming from a dos/windows world , where the level of hand holding is much higher. To be honest , I tried vi/emacs once , and never fired it up agian. I prefer to use joe at the commnd line or kedit in xfce. The more I learn about linux/unix the more I like it in comparison to dos/windows. Its just that its a big diffrence , and almost all the tools are unhidden band not behind gui front ends. much more of a get your hands dirty type of thing. Thank god for YaST , that tool has been priceless to me. If not for it , I most likely may have jumped ship. That tool and this list have been invaluable to me in my linux adventures.

The so-called "mate" who got me into Linux said, "If you want to use Unix, you've got to learn vi." Like a mug, I believed him, but now, I could kiss him (if he wasn't a bloke, and wasn't so ugly!), because there have been a few times when I've screwed the system up so bad, that vi is the only thing that has worked! Best thing he could have done, was introduce me to that mongrel modal program! Now, I must admit, I've softened up a bit in my old age, and (wherever possible) I use .......wait for it!...... gvim!!!!!

That's one of the things I love about it too! I also came from a DOS/WIN background, and I never realised how much joy and satisfaction can be obtained from getting a simple thing like wvdial working. The first moment it actually logs on to the Net, you feel a real sense of achievement.

The other thing my "mate" said was "YaST is your friend!" That's one thing he WAS right about!!! -- Regards Don Hansford ECKYTECH COMPUTING Surfing the Net (without crashing) With SuSE 6.4 Linux (Thanx Linus!) Nonsence... Just s few weeks ago 'they' forced me to install NT on my system at my (new) job. At home, I am using Linux exclusive for over 5 years. It is hard to install NT... You get error messages which have nothing to do with the problem. If (when!) something goes wrong, you get no relevant information and your only hope is to reboot the damned thing again. I'm not trying to be funny. I really did not understand the messages the few times there were error-messages. The point is, I am not used to Windows anymore and I can tell you from first hand, it is NOT simple. I know computers. I can install a complete working Linux (server) system from scratch in under 1 hour. (I mean fully operational with mail, www, etc., not 'just' an install.) NT took me almost a working day and I got dizzy with all the reboots. And I only had a desktop system, not a server! Working with Windows is NOT simple. For instance, please tell me the logic why I must click a start-button to stop my machine? I bet you are so used to this silly situation, that you smiled when you read the question because you thought I was being funny. Well, I'm serious. Windows is full of such illogical things. But you are so used to the illogical Windows ways, that you don't think about it... To make things clear, with 'you' I mean a typical Windows user which tries Linux for the first time and not someone in particular. The funniest thing I heard was when a person told me they liked how easy Windows is. He said all he had to do was buy this 1000 page book. If the easy version requires a 1000 page book over and above the manual I'd hate to see the hard version-) Nick -- Nick Zentena "The Linux issue," Wladawsky-Berger explained, "is whether this is a fundamentally disruptive technology, like the microprocessor and the Internet?
