To be honest , I tried vi/emacs once , and never fired it up agian.
The so-called "mate" who got me into Linux said, "If you want to use Unix, you've got to learn vi." Like a mug, I believed him, but now, I could kiss him (if he wasn't a bloke, and wasn't so ugly!), because there have been a few times when I've screwed the system up so bad, that vi is the only thing that has worked! Best thing he could have done, was introduce me to that mongrel modal program! Now, I must admit, I've softened up a bit in my old age, and (wherever possible) I use .......wait for it!...... gvim!!!!!
I prefer to use joe at the commnd line or kedit in xfce. The more I learn about linux/unix the more I like it in comparison to dos/windows. Its just that its a big diffrence , and almost all the tools are unhidden band not behind gui front ends. much more of a get your hands dirty type of thing.
That's one of the things I love about it too! I also came from a DOS/WIN background, and I never realised how much joy and satisfaction can be obtained from getting a simple thing like wvdial working. The first moment it actually logs on to the Net, you feel a real sense of achievement.
Thank god for YaST , that tool has been priceless to me. If not for it , I most likely may have jumped ship. That tool and this list have been invaluable to me in my linux adventures.
The other thing my "mate" said was "YaST is your friend!" That's one thing he WAS right about!!! -- Regards Don Hansford ECKYTECH COMPUTING Surfing the Net (without crashing) With SuSE 6.4 Linux (Thanx Linus!)
