OT - LyX complains to produce capital letters with pdflatex
Hello SuSErs. I'm trying to write my thesis with LyX. I need capital letters so installed LaTeX2e's dropping package from CTAN to /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/. SuSE 8.0 Pro-Spanish. All defaults packages from SuSE. Everything works like a charm for all preview formats DVI, PDF , etc , except PDF(pdflatex) the one I really need. I attached a lyx file which shows the error and explains further the issue (Hope attaching file is allowed in the list) Please if somebody knows any, it would be really helpfull. Thanks in advance Oxiel

Hello SuSErs.
I'm trying to write my thesis with LyX. I need capital letters so installed LaTeX2e's dropping package from CTAN to /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/.
I would have done it /usr/local/share/texmf/tex/latex so it will not be deleted when I do an update
Everything works like a charm for all preview formats DVI, PDF , etc , except PDF(pdflatex) the one I really need.
Undefined control sequence: \dropping{2}{P}lease dont't be rud with me, ... So what I understand (though not a TeX expert) droppping.sty is not found. Hence the question after you have installed the package have you run *SuSEconfig --module tetex* if not do it most probably the error will go away or SuSEconfig will create more :-) -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx
Hello Togan Thanks for answering :-)

This is something i will remember for next installs/upgrades.

I did these: mkdir -p /usr/local/share/texmf/tex/latex mv /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/dropping /usr/local/share/texmf/tex/latex/ texhash SuSEconfig --module tetex SuSEconfig (just in case ;) But the error continues :( . By the way, if you export the test.lyx file to test.tex and then execute in a console pdflatex test.tex Then errors arise, the truth is I don't know how to interpret those .... This is a old package and and actually was made for MiKTeX as far I as I understand and pdflatex is very picky, I know by experience If you can convert it to dvi or ps then it would be a two step process dvi->pdf or ps->pdf HTH -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx

There is also dvipdfm.rpm, which appears to do a decent job in
converting dvi->pdf, better then first creating a ps file and then
converting to pdf with ghostscript. dvipdfm even produces a clickable
table of contents and clickable references in the pdf file.

Even with a small file (five lines) it doesn't work. I gues there is a conflit between pdflatex and dropping. You have another solution: make everything in latex and postscript and afterwards use "ps2pdf" to convert your document to PDF. The only case where it isn't possible is when you use PDF-specific macros (for example to have animated objects in latex). - -- Thibaut Cousin E-mail : cousin@in2p3.fr Web : http://clrwww.in2p3.fr -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.7 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE9xqTzv1vqsTa1E4oRAu9vAJ0R9+U4hq1GmIS3N599NBeO4UTZ4gCfY36W 2Ph63n1kVUAaUBcylNKj4rY= =4HCZ -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Did you read the help file from lyx: "extended features"? In chapter 7.5 there is a sample of dropping capitals, and the sample works, at least in suse 7.3 with lyx 1.2.1 (I compiled it myself, it's not the suse version). In fact, that chapters mentions that the CTAN package is not standard, and it doesn't work in the demo. It seems easier to use, however. [...] I must rectify: the other method _is_ difficult to use. I just tried :-) -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Yes I read it, in fact is chapter 5.7, i've have to admit, was trying to simplify things, the example in the chapter involves to change parameters everytime you change the font and/or size of the capitalized letter, but noway, if i can't get it work with dropping i should do it that way :(

You work a lot with LyX isn't it ?, just in case, do you have KommaScprit manual in spanish or english? How you export images from internet (png, gif, jpeg, etc) to display them in pdf files? No, not a lot. I know it since perhaps two or three years ago, and I wrote little things, trying to learn its use.

Let me check [...] Yes, I have it installed. But I think the docs are in german...
How you export images from internet (png, gif, jpeg, etc) to display them in pdf files?
Ugh. That's a problem I have not fully solved yet. Togan here helped me to solve some issues, and it works. Let me see... First, Lyx wanted figures in postcript (*.ps), so you had to change them. Even then, depending on what style you were using, they would display or not on some output formats or others. In the case of html, it changed the extensions to .gif, regardeless of the original. You can edit the html files themselves, but that's not the proper way. So I updated my lyx to version 1.2.1, which can import many image formats, and displays then in lyx. Still, the output works ramdomly. As I was trying to use docbook styles, Togan told me to use db2html or db2pdf for the conversions (I found it's better not to use the lyx menu for that) , and edit the defaults in file /usr/share/sgml/docbook/docbook-toys/suse-both.dsl". There are lines like "(define %graphic-default-extension% "gif")" (or "eps" for print) which you can change for a different default. Alternatively, you can use a local copy. Why it does not accept the name in the lyx file, I don't know. We talked about that in the previous month thread "Lyx and docbook" in the archive. Meanwhile, I'm reading some howtos, in order to get a better picture.
