I just got around to installing VMWare from the SuSE distro CD's and getting that to run. What a cool package! It is weird to see M$ running in a virtual machine like that. Scary. Everything works, though, except sound. I am running from within KDE 2.1.2 . VMWare wants to use the /dev/dsp device, and while this does not generate errors, I am not getting any sound output. Any suggestions? -ronc
This is a known problem and they are improving it. It depends on what
your soundcard is and may still depend on when you boot the VM.
Talking with their engineers at LinuxWorld two years ago, they found
sound intermittent. Boot the VM and it works, boot again and it's
choppy, boot again and it doesn't work, pull hair and repeat for
random results. It sounds like for at least some cards, it works
consistently. Look around on their Web site for details.

Ya, it's no big deal. I noticed that a "real" license for VMWare is $299. That is pretty darned steep. I know that people on this list have mentioned Win4Lin as a good product for Windows emulation. Any other opinions out there on the subject? -ronc On Friday 08 June 2001 11:28, you wrote:

I've found it necessary to kill artsd if I'm running kde. It tends to hog the dsp device. Apart from that, I've had no major problems. The sound sometimes makes weird 'clicks', but since I'm only using it for business programs, and not for playing mp3:s, that's not a problem for me.
