I went from XP to SuSE, but Win was faster!!!!!!!!
I bet this subject will turn some heads ;) I had Win XP home installed on my comp previously with the exact same hardware config (actually when i had windows on the comp it had 128 LESS RAM than it does now, as well as more periferals, namely a joystick and a printer) I hate to say it, but XP was running faster and better then my current Linux installation. I WANT TO PROVE TO MYSELF THAT LINUX IS BETTER THAN WIN XP BUT IT IS HARD TO DO WHEN XP WAS RUNNING FASTER IN ALL DEPARTMENTS THEN LINUX evan though the harware config IS IN FAVER OF LINUX. i am running SuSE 8.2 pro on a comp w/ a 500 MHz intel celeron and ~500 MB RAM. It is going to be a server but KDE runs kind of slow while i am working on it. Any tips on how i can get it running faster. Things like unnessisary functions that are automatically started upon startup that i can disable, fancy things like animated menues that can be disabled, or just miner tweeks that i can apply to sqeeze a little more speed out of my proccesor. Dear Scott, Welcome to the list. You should know that the majority of the folks here migrated from M$ to Linux; some a long time ago, some recently. Try to pose a clear question for us to assist you. We are users like you and we can offer alot of help to nuubies because most of us have probably seen the same probs you have and will run into. Ask as many questions as you like, but ask only one per email. That helps you to keep track of the replies. I have a Pentium III 1.266GHz Dual Processor PC running SUSE 8.2 kernel 2.4.x w/ 512MB RAM (PC133) and a pure IDE-ATA disk sub-sys and it is turning out SETI (Search for ET Intelligence) units at the rate of 5 or 6 per 24 hr day. I run four SETI clients (yes that is 2 per CPU) at all times. Right next to that PC is my M$ XP sys running on a single Athlon XP2600, 512MB RAM (DDR PC2700) on a pure IDE-ATA disk sub-sys and no matter what I do it can only turn out 2 SETI units per day and that is with only 1 client going at any one time because it boggs down too much if I try 2 clients. So XP doing work on a P4 equlivent running at 2.6GHz cannot even make it to 1/2 of what a Linux (SUSE 8.2 running the 'poor performance' 2.4.x kernel) can do on one P-III 1.266 GHz. Think about those numbers; when you see articles that benchmark sys performance and show 10 or 20 % difference between different HW they proclaim it as a "Big Boost" worth buying into. But they don't tell much about the Operating Sys and how it affects the ability to do work. Good Luck, PeterB -- -- Proud to use SuSE Linux, since 5.2 Loving using SuSE Linux 8.2 MyBlog http://vancampen.org/blog/ Currently listening to The Resophonics http://www.resophonics.com/music.html --

Hopefully you're not trolling. Do this: hdparm /dev/hda It's very important the DMA acces is on (1) /dev/hda: multcount = 16 (on) IO_support = 1 (32-bit) unmaskirq = 1 (on) using_dma = 1 (on) To optimize disk access you could use this: hdparm -c1d1u1W1 /dev/hda If you see improvement, put it in /etc/init.d/boot.local And read man hdparm so you understand hdparm. You could try hdparm -t /dev/hda before and after.

He is ... windows xp, with 128M of memory ... doesn't have time for anything except swapping for the first 5-10 minutes while it starts up.

/dev/hda: multcount = 16 (on) IO_support = 1 (32-bit) unmaskirq = 1 (on) using_dma = 1 (on)

I actually wanted to get som information on how i can make my Linux bok run faster and though i should include a catchy subject. The first line was just a joke, i have recently finnished reading a book about the history of linux and most of the messeges shown in it are quite pasionate about Linux, i got the idea there. before this i did not even know what a message called a 'troll' was. Now i know.
Anyway i was quite seriouse about wanting info on how to get my computer to run faster.
Sorry for the confution i have generated.

How did you measure your performance then? Kernel 2.4 is a little slower to get user input, so it could give you a wrong impression (Linux slower). Praise

I have not used any actual proper method of testing speeds. i just notice that things like a *.txt file that is 4 lines long takes 2-4 times longer to open now than it did when i had winows installed. there are numberus other things like this that just run much slower then you would normally expect. ----------------------- I counted 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004, etc. while the file is opening and it takes Linux much longer. win took about 1-2 secs to open a text file, linux takes 4-8 secs to open a similar file. the same is true for the start menu in linux, opening file manager, everything. It is not like i am comparing a Win box with 2 gHz to a Linux box with 200 mHz. I had win installed, i reformatted the HD, ADDED 128 ram, and installed SuSE 8.2 pro. and now everything runs slower. Does anybody know how i can squeeze more out of what i have got? thx scott FadMart - http://www.fadmart.com - An Associate of the World's Largest Store!

You need to post more information on your system, in general. Processor, speed, memory, hard disk ... disk layout, the output of free, no. of processes running, etc. Generally, when you start the filemanager the first time it will take a second or two for it to load. The next time you click the filemanager, it'll pop up immediately. Iff, when you click on it, and the disks start sounding as if they're working a lot, every time you load it. It mean's the computer is swapping for some reason.

New RAM is of the same kind of the old RAM? Once I got some performance problems because I got a pair of different ram sticks (the system was WAY slower than with only one part of ram). Praise
