[SLE] cannot play SVCD anymore using KDE 3.5.3
Hi everybody Since I've updated to KDE 3.5.3 (on Suse 10.0) my self-made SVCD wouldn't play anymore in mplayer or xine. It plays on a Win-PC. Since it didn't work I've done the "libdvdcss-stuff" again, but no change. Mplayer just says "seek failed", no more messages than that. gxine says "open...", and ist seems it really tryes, but with no success... (console output of gxine below). I don't have any other CD's or DVD's, so I can't say if its just the self-burned CD or another problem. However I can play the mpeg-file from disk bot not from K3B burned CD. Have I missed something whe updating from KDE 3.5.2 to 3.5.3? Any hints, please? thanks Daniel -------------------- console shows the following with gxine: -------------------- (gxine:13049): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_new: assertion `width > 0' failed (gxine:13049): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_get_n_channels: assertion `pixbuf != NULL' failed (gxine:13049): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_get_bits_per_sample: assertion `pixbuf != NULL' failed (gxine:13049): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_get_width: assertion `pixbuf != NULL' failed (gxine:13049): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_get_height: assertion `pixbuf != NULL' failed (gxine:13049): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_get_rowstride: assertion `pixbuf != NULL' failed (gxine:13049): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed lirc: Kann nicht initialisieren - Fernbedienung deaktiviert lirc: Evtl. läuft lircd nicht oder der Socket kann nicht verbunden werden? ----------------------------- -- Daniel Bauer photographer Basel Switzerland professional photography: http://www.daniel-bauer.com special interest site: http://www.bauer-nudes.com -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

Probably the CD is bad, or slightly so. Still, you could try a manual mount... Some people claim good results "washing" the CD with water and mild soap, but I would be afraid to try. To clean a CD or a DVD use methylated spirits (denatured alcohol)- metho does not damage the plastic. I use a Kleenex tissue "rolled" into a ball, some metho on it (just enough to make it moist but not saturated) and then using a circular motion go around the surface of the DVD. After the metho evaporates (a few seconds or so ) I then use another tissue with the same motion to polish the surface. Been doing this for a few years now. And you would have been cleaning them wrong for years then! Everybody knows or should know you don't clean a CD in a circular motion all the way around the CD! Why you ask? Because if you scratch it, then you scratch it all the way around the disc, making a complete sector unreadable, thus pretty much making the disc useless. And a kleenex? You're just asking for trouble aren't you? If you do some research on the matter, you'll find that you should clean this type media with an up & down motion across the the disc, from the outer edge to the center, thus eliminating any danger of destroying a complete sector. You've been lucky or maybe you haven't always, but didn't know it was you that killed it. regards, Lee -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

hmm... it was a new empty cdr, freshly and slowly burned from an image that always worked before (and still works to play on a Win 98 PC)... same brand as always. Even a second try with another new cdr gives the same results. I have no problems with these cdr's with data CD's. manual mount didn't change anything. putting it in the cd-writer-drive (instead of the cd-rom/dvd-rom drive) gives a different result, though: the movie starts in gxine, but it shows just colourful artefacts - quite artistic, but not, what it should, of course :-) Don't know if this is a libdvdcss issue, a mount problem, something else... Any hints what I can do to better isolate the problem? Washing with soap and water shouldn't hurt a thing. I even 'polished' dvd's and cd's to remove minor scratches with very good success using a light car polish or something similar. It works well if the damage isn't great and I've had very good success on deep scratches too. -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com
