kernel for AMD question
Hi list, i have an Athlon 600 Mhz (K7) When i do:
cat /proc/version Linux version 2.4.19-4GB (root@Athlon.suse.de) (gcc version 3.2) #1 Fri Sep 13 13:19:15 UTC 2002
uname -a Linux nainitaal 2.4.19-4GB #1 Fri Sep 13 13:19:15 UTC 2002 i686 unknown
is it correct that i have no AMD optimized kernel installed? If so would it be a big performance improvement to install one? If yes which one should i install? Greetings, Gert Caers

If you didn't compile it yourself, then yes. SuSE doesn't provide AMD optimized kernels.

Yes, there is some performance improvement.
If yes which one should i install?
You need to compile it yourself. Charles -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.7 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE+LPiC3epPyyKbwPYRAn3NAJ4pnQ8a8+OzteS/TK1+pwDKPt4AAwCgv0L/ t4wg25i71okYx7u7GuMcnn0= =BweR -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

I typed too quickly here, by AMD I mean anything less than an Athelon such as K6, K6-II, K7, etc. Charles -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.7 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE+LXrP3epPyyKbwPYRAv0zAJ9K/3u2liR9AX2iVo9qFP6LzMCqfACeKZDq XMQN/EDEM7ovsucHcEdmTmY= =xEjM -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

i'd like to try it just fur the fun of it but can you point me to any resources that tell me which options to enable and which not for a K7? (i already had a look at LFS http://www.nl.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/intro.shtml for a general description and the kernel howto ) According to Anders Johansson i already have an optimized kernel: #>rpm -q k_athlon k_athlon-2.4.19-66 but if i understand this right this is optimized for modern Athlons. Thank you! Gert Caers

When you do make menuconfig there is a specific option naming K7 for processor type (with linux 2.4.20) -- Richard Fletcher, Sheffield, UK.

A K7 is an Athlon. You can check which config options were set in the
SuSE default by looking at the file /proc/config.gz
Try this for instance
zcat /proc/config.gz | grep CONFIG_MK7
If you get "CONFIG_MK7=y" then the kernel is already optimized for your
platform.
And yes, I know about zgrep, but for some reason that doesn't always
work on /proc/config.gz, at least not for me.

After looking through the menuconfig options, it seems like Athelon opts are for the k7, so you can just install the SuSE RPM. If you are interested in doing a recompile, the option is called "Processor Family" under "Processor Type and Features". Sorry for the confusion :-(. The build host is athlon.suse.de so chances are that you have the athlon optimized kernel installed, but just to make sure, do "rpm -q k_athlon". If you get something other than "not installed", then you are running the athlon kernel.
If so would it be a big performance improvement to install one? If yes which one should i install?
If you got "not installed" above, then k_athlon.rpm would be the kernel
to install.
