Actually, here in Germany, this used to be pretty common, in particular for
everything related to Linux. IIRC we made a large proportion of our box sales
with that book store channel. This might have to do with sciense book stores
in university cities having some tradition in selling books about Unix and
X11.
But times have changed, and most people buy software in electronics megastores
where the salespeople rarely know anything about those colorful boxes they
sell (unless it's the latest hottest game, of course, because they are
already almost finished with it).
