So it's almost as though there just isn't anything there...

IIANM, you should check your /etc/modules.conf, and check the above modules. usb-uhci is for a controller, usb-ohci is for a different kind of controller. If you have 2 controllers, it may be correct, but my guess is they conflict. Maybe the new kernel's modules are now working correctly, since you shouldn't load both. HTH.
I've got the same problem with suse 8.1 and with the newer kernels. It doen't come from a conflict betwenn USB drivers, I run both since I've two different interfaces. I had to add : ACPI=oldboot as a kernel parameter at boot and everything runs fine. Catimimi.
