Doug, May I toss in my 1/2 electronic cent:
OK, I removed everything, and you may or may not remember what this was about. If I read the original message correctly, you don't trim off everything, what you're meant to do is not copy everything (in many cases, there have been more than two full copies of the message).
I find that replies without context are mostly useless. Who can remember, out of almost 200 emails a day, what the subject was about. Not me, at any rate. Not me either, not 9,999 people out of 10,000, if that many.
As far as replies both to the list and to the sender, sorry, the list manager has set it up that way; if you just hit reply, you only send to the originator. If you want to send to the list, you have to reply "to all" in ADDITION to the originator. That's not my experience with KMail v.2.2.1. I had your message up on the screen. I pointed to the "To: suse-linux-e@suse.com" and clicked the right button. A small menu popped up: Send to... Send reply to... Forward to... Add to addressbook Copy to clipboard Guess which line I then clicked. Of course, "Send reply to..." On comes a pre-addressed page with a copy of the original message, of which I clip off everything *but* the essential part(s).
