As k3b is a wrapper for wodim try
wodim --devices
as root and see what you get.
Here is what I get
SE-03:/home/vendion # wodim --devices wodim: Overview of accessible drives (1 found) : ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 0 dev='/dev/scd0' rwrw-- : 'PIONEER' 'DVD-RW DVR-K17RS' -------------------------------------------------------------------------
It also is showing up in k3b after being shut down over night

Hi I just installed Opensuse 11.1 x86_64 and I was faced with the same issue. I have 2 IDE optical devices: a DVD player and a DVD burner. While K3b recognized the DVD player, it did not see the burner. However, if I inserted a CD/DVD into the burner, it was correctly mounted, and I could see the content using konqueror. So I tried starting K3b as root, and now I could access (and burn !) a DVD using K3b. Thus it looked like a permission problem. I tried to add myself to the disk/wheel/audio groups with no luck. Then I googled, and found that *apparently* there is some kind of bug with KDE 4 and K3b. I logged off, choosed KDE 3.5 and started K3b ! It worked ! K3b now see the DVD burner. I went back to KDE 4 and launched K3b. The DVD burner is correctly seen. Go figure ! Just my 0.02 I wish you all a Merry Christmas Matthias -- / \ /_!_\ My e-mail address has just changed.
