Could it be that the latest generation of CDRW's are a bit different from the first generation of CDRW's (long shot!)
I believe all post-1999 CDR(W) drivers are MMC-compliant, unless you bought an old drive, I wouldn't count on that. Have you checked the cdrecord (1) man page? Here's a nice little quote: -force Force to continue on some errors. This option currently implements some tricks that will allow you to blank bad CD-RW disks. Have you tried this?
