I grabbed the latest stable kernel (and am in process of grabbing the 2.6-test9 via wget) from kernel.org, and unpacked the file.
when I type make xconfig, I get :
Makefile:259: arch/i386/Makefile: no such file or directory make: *** No rule to make target 'arch/i386/Makefile'. Stop.
i've read Linus's readme, along with the howto in /usr/share/doc, and I don't understand this error. what caused it, and how can I fix it?
I suspect you didn't do a 'make mrproper' right off the bat.
Assuming you were in: /usr/src/linux when you did the 'make xconfig', then you didn't have a .config file in that directory. I believe the make mrproper will 'gin' one up.
But remember, a 'make mrproper' will always erase any .config file you already have created (by the xconfig process) so you only want to do that once. Right off the bat.
Even better yet (exclusive to SuSE) do a make cloneconfig in the /usr/src/linux dir to make a .config based on the running kernel. Ken
