I suspect you didn't do a 'make mrproper' right off the bat. Assuming you were in: /usr/src/linux when you did the 'make xconfig', then you didn't have a .config file in that directory. I believe the make mrproper will 'gin' one up. But remember, a 'make mrproper' will always erase any .config file you already have created (by the xconfig process) so you only want to do that once. Right off the bat.

Is this command run while in the directory which has the source code (eg "/usr/src/linux" in SuSE)? If the command is issued while in another directory, the makefile will not be found and the error message above is issued. HTH. LW999
