That doesn't match my experience. Like others who have replied here, I've used openSUSE on many different types of laptop for years - at least 3 or 4 Dell models, a couple of IBM models, and an older Compaq model. Never had a problem getting networking to work on any of them. In fact, openSUSE 11.2 installed and detected all hardware flawlessly (no accelerated video, but the nouveau driver worked fine) on a Dell D610 I was testing on around release time; Windows 7 (of all things) didn't detect and configure all the hardware, and the wireless card didn't work at all after installation (it had to pull drivers from the 'net - which required I plug it into a wired jack).
