Is there an English (US) or German dictionary -- not just a spelling guide, but one with actual definitions -- that is useful under Linux? Where can I find it?
SuSE 9.1 Pro (and possibly / probably others) includes an application called gnome-dictionary (simply "Dictionary" in the KDE launch menu in the "Office" sub-menu. This is a generic client for the RFC 2229 dictionary access protocol (a.k.a. "DICT"). It comes pre-set with several English dictionaries (i.e., with proper host . And yes, it includes real live dictionary definitions. If you can find an German dictionary server that supports RFC 2229, then you can simply configure it into gnome-dictionary and you'll be all set. Googling for "Dictionary German RFC 2229" turns up several possibilities. Check 'em out.
