Is there an English (US) or German dictionary -- not just a spelling guide, but one with actual definitions -- that is useful under Linux? Where can I find it? Thanks dj tuchler

The dictionary and the software that access are distinct things. You have the basic GUI and CLI tools, gnome-dictionary and dict, resp. Now it's up to you to find compatible dictionary servers that suit your needs and tastes,

kdict works for me. I swapped the HELP button for it on my desktop. It has multiple listings. Mike

Hi, Use YAST > Software >Install and Remove then search for "dict" which is in SUSE 9.1 Pro. Install it and then from a shell enter "dict {anyword}" where your search word is 'anyword'. Very powerful tool PeterB -- Using SUSE since 5.2 Loving SUSE 9.1 Pro My Blog: http://vancampen.org/blog --

SuSE 9.1 Pro (and possibly / probably others) includes an application called gnome-dictionary (simply "Dictionary" in the KDE launch menu in the "Office" sub-menu. This is a generic client for the RFC 2229 dictionary access protocol (a.k.a. "DICT"). It comes pre-set with several English dictionaries (i.e., with proper host . And yes, it includes real live dictionary definitions. If you can find an German dictionary server that supports RFC 2229, then you can simply configure it into gnome-dictionary and you'll be all set. Googling for "Dictionary German RFC 2229" turns up several possibilities. Check 'em out.

There's also the KDE "KDict" panel application. I love it. It's in kdenetwork3-query. -Nick -- <<< The answer is out there, Neo. >>> /`-_ Nicholas R.
