Yes, I've used XFCE. I used 3.x.x for some time, and I find it is a competent window manager with competent tools. XFCE and IceWM are about the same speed, but still notably slower than WMaker and Blackbox.
If y'all are still in the dark as to what the heck we're talking about, check out the web sites below (in no particular order). I'd encourage you to stop using the window manager you are using for a few days and try something new, especially if you think that X has to be slow ;).
