Hi there, I just started playing with ICEWM and it's a LOT faster than KDE. I think I should probably stick to it and let it grow on me some more. What I'd like to know is if there's some more info on ICE on the SuSE CD's. A manual would be nice. One more thing: I can run any KDE app in ICE right? Manual: /usr/doc/packages/icewm/ or http://icewm.themes.org Using Ice is cool, except for the menuing system. I've looked a bit for a menu parser/creator, but have yet to find one. I'll keep looking. Another issue that I have with Ice is the fact that if I run KFM at the same time, I lose the Ice rootmenu on the desktop, which means that I am forced to use the Win-style button in the lower-left. LenZ: The IceWM-1.0.1 rpm you released does not install on a 6.3 system ;). It complains about LibJPEG. I have yet to make 1.0.1 run. Thanks, OTOH, for including the themes; the themes from the source code are downright spartan. I can't even find the XFVWM theme on icewm.t.o! Yatsen: Yes, KDE apps run fine, so long as you don't remove the KDE libraries. -- -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | Atipa Linux Solutions -o) jpennington@atipa.com | Kansas City, MO /\\ 816-241-2641 x107 | http://www.atipa.com _\_V -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Hi, I'ma new Suse 6.3 user ... Everything in my install went fine but I have two question: I used Yast (not Yast2) because I find no way to do manually partition in the hard disk. There is any way to accomplish that? My sound card ES1371 refuses to work As I fin in the newsgroup this is a common problem among people with SMP motherboard. Not with the current version of YaST2, sorry! This will be a feature for the next release.

Sorry, can't help on this one. But I remember quite a lot of posts about this :) You might want to check the archives. I have a dual pII 350s and with ES1371 selected in the kernel it works fine for me. Are you positive it was selected when you compiled kernel I've recompiled kernels and forgotten things like ethcard ppp or sound card many times. Ian alessandro@carini.net writes:

IIRC, Not yet.

The solution (at this point) is to use the commercial OSS driver http://www.opensound.com ($20 US + $10 for AudioPCI option) or the free ALSA drivers http://www.alsa-project.org. I will warn you; the ALSA drivers are not perfect yet. There is an ALSA RPM on the SuSE CD set [snd], but I do not know if they work as-is with SMP or if you will have to compile your own. For information on configuring ALSA, look at the /etc/conf.modules file. There's already an example ALSA configuration there :). -- -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | Atipa Linux Solutions -o) jpennington@atipa.com | Kansas City, MO /\\ 816-241-2641 x107 | http://www.atipa.com _\_V -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
I'm using a Tyan S1564D board with a pair of P233MMXs, and when I installed SuSE (I wiped the drives and started from scratch), I made sure to select the OSS_SMP from the PAY section, and also the kernmods, which is, I believe, the SMP version of the kernel modules. Once everything was installed, I ran the OSS script as instructed and everything went just fine. The sound works great. I never went near ALSA for this machine. The catch here... I am using an AWE64 ISA card. Therefore, I can't speak for the validity of this solution for your PCI card. The oss and oss_smp in the pay section are fully licensed versions for SuSE users. Well, that's what the description says, anyway. Maybe this helps, maybe it doesn't, but I just thought I'd speak up as having had great success with what came on the 6.3 CD set. Bye for now, Stuart.

You're new here, aren't you? ;) Yes, I've used XFCE. I used 3.x.x for some time, and I find it is a competent window manager with competent tools. XFCE and IceWM are about the same speed, but still notably slower than WMaker and Blackbox. If y'all are still in the dark as to what the heck we're talking about, check out the web sites below (in no particular order). I'd encourage you to stop using the window manager you are using for a few days and try something new, especially if you think that X has to be slow ;).
