New install sounds very drastic. Any reason why you don't want to make those portions of the filesystem writeable temporarily while you do the upgrade? mount -o remount,rw blah,blah Or boot from the rescue system. At least that is what I would try but did not upgrade kernels on this 8.2 release of SuSE. I have a kernel upgrade to do soon so keep your finger crossed for me (switching from k_deflt to k_athlon)
