Hi Art, I gather you are having problems with a USB modem. I have not had any experiance with them but you should be able to use kppp to connect to the modem. Somewhere in the setup of KPPP there is a terminal which you can use to communicate with the modem. (can't check at the moment as I use kppp to connect to the internet) Also in KPPP next to the terminal button is another button which test the modem. Minicom will also work, it is a copy of the old DOS telix program. Are you sure you have got all the modules loaded for the USB modem. I would be checking the /var/log/messages to see if there are messages generated when you connect the modem to the USB bus. I think it will be using hotplug to load the modules.
