Have you looked at File – Preferences – Input Devices – Configure Extended Input Devices?
This allows you to enable/disable the pen/tablet/eraser and lets gimp treat each one differently (see the input devices dialogue). For example, you can set the pen to be a brush and the eraser to be an eraser; so no need to change tools.
This works for me with an old graphire serial and should work newer graphires. If not, it may be worthwhile looking at the /etc/X11/corg.conf file (or configuring X again through sax to make sure it is picking up all the devices).

Hi I haven't had the time to check it in 10.3, but I needed http://linuxwacom.sourceforge.net/ to get my wacom working correctly under Suse 10.2. It is a very detailed howto to get it working (with a special driver). If it seems impossible to get the wacom working you may consider trying it. Neil -- There are two kinds of people: 1.
